  • Chapter I 1 Preparation For Healing Those who have attended the recent great healing campaigns will witness to the fact that mighty signs and wonders are being performed. Almost everyone who is sick desires to get well. It is natural when word gets around of the miracles of healing that are taking place, that there should be a rush to get prayed for. But we must remember that this is Divine Healing—the deliverance comes entirely from God; consequently there are some conditions to be met before the individual may receive his healing. Even Christ the Son of God, usually did not heal the afflicted person who came to Him without first giving him some instructions. To one whose faith was weak, He said, “If thou canst believe, all things are possible to him that believeth.” Mark 9:23. To a woman who was not an Israelite, and therefore outside the household of faith, He said, “Let the children first be filled: for it is not meet to take the children’s bread and cast it unto dogs.” Mark 7:27. Jesus said this not to hurt the woman but to get her on healing grounds—eventually He healed her daughter. To another who perhaps intended to continue on in a sinful life, He charged, “Behold thou art made whole; sin no more, lest a worse thing come unto thee.” John 5:14. Instruction Absolutely Necessary 5
  • How to Receive Your Healing It is therefore good for people to realize and understand from the beginning that instruction before healing is absolutely necessary. Except in the case of invalids who cannot attend the instruction services, it is a requirement that the person to be prayed for, will attend the services when this instruction is given. Some feel that this is a hardship. But should we not give God the chance that we give the doctors or the physicians? People have spent fortunes, traveling thousands of miles to secure the services of a specialist or to attend a clinic. Often they are required to spend a week under observation before a physician will consider their case. But Divine Healing is without money and without price. The majority of people understand these things and usually cooperate. Some, however, though they may have patiently submitted to a dozen operations, will not take the time to listen to the Word of God for a few days. The Importance of the Instruction Services The instruction services are considered an essential part of the Divine Healing ministration. “So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.” People on a certain occasion gathered in from distant points to hear Christ. They brought no food with them, probably intending to leave early, but so interested did they become in the Lord’s teaching that they tarried all day. In the evening, Christ miraculously fed the multitude and sent them away to their homes. Such interest in the Word of God resulted in the creation of great faith, and it was small wonder that the next day, as they brought their sick to Christ, “as many as touched him were made whole.” Mark 6:33-56. Faith was so high that folk got 6
  • Preparation For Healing healed merely by touching Christ. Contrast the results at Nazareth (recorded in vss. 1-6 of the same chapter) where “he could there do no mighty work, save that he laid his hands upon a few sick folk, and healed them.” The people in that city would not accept His teaching, therefore few miracles could take place. 7
  • Chapter II 2 Faith Must Be Founded on the Word of God The first step in receiving your deliverance is to know something of the Bible teaching concerning healing. One’s faith must be thoroughly founded upon “thus saith the Lord.” There is space in this brief outline to recall but a few of the many Scriptural Promises concerning healing. It would be well for the candidate to read the entire books of Mark and The Acts. These faith-building books will inspire one who is seeking healing. The writer himself was healed from reading especially the passage of Mark 11:22-24. Healing in the Old Testament Under the Mosaic Law, Divine Healing was given as a promise to Israel, with certain conditions attached to the fulfillment. Exodus 15:26 reads: And he said, if thou wilt diligently hearken to the voice of the Lord thy God, and wilt do that which is right in his sight, and wilt give ear to his commandments, and keep all his statutes, I will put none of these diseases upon him, which I have brought upon the Egyptians; for I am the Lord that healeth thee. Although the children of Israel’s faith was weak along 9
  • How to Receive Your Healing many lines, it certainly was not in the matter of healing. The Psalmist declares that “there was not one feeble person among the tribes.” Psalm 105:37. The Book of Hebrews informs us that in all things the New Covenant under Christ was much better than the Old Covenant under Moses. If then we find the promise of healing under the Law of Moses, how much more would we expect to find it under the Better Covenant of Our Lord Jesus Christ! Again, the Book of the Psalms, that book of inspired worship which has always brought great blessing to the devoted Christian, declares that the Lord is the Healer of all our diseases. Psalm 103:2-3: Bless the Lord, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits: Who forgiveth all thine iniquities, who Healeth all thy diseases. We know that we must never forget to praise the Lord for pardoning our iniquities, but we are also commanded not to forget the benefit of the healing of all our diseases. In the New Testament, we are informed that healing is a part of the Atonement. Nor could we hardly expect otherwise, for Christ came to save men, and the body is a part of man. Christ’s “Body was broken” for our body, and “by His stripes we were healed.” And when even was come, they brought unto him many that were possessed with devils: and he cast out the spirits with his word, and healed all that were sick: That it might be fulfilled which was spoken by Esaias the prophet, saying, Himself took our infirmities and bare our sicknesses. Matt. 8:16-17. 10
  • Faith Must Be Founded on the Word of God Healing has therefore been brought to us by Christ’s Vicarious Sufferings; it is already ours and needs but to be appropriated by faith. The Great Commission Includes Healing Furthermore, Christ in the Great Commission expressly stated that healing of the sick, among other things, was one of the signs which was to follow believers: And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature. He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be damned. And these signs shall follow them that believe; In my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues; They shall take up serpents; and if they drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them; they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover. Mark 16:15-18. The Great Commission which authorizes the preaching of the gospel thus identifies true believers by declaring that the healing of the sick is one of the signs which shall follow their ministry. Finally, let us mention that the book of James makes Divine Healing practically an ordinance in the Church. James 5:13-16. Is any among you afflicted? let him pray. Is any merry? let him sing psalms. Is any sick among you? Let him call for the elders of the church; and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord. And the prayer of faith shall save the sick, and 11
  • How to Receive Your Healing the Lord shall raise him up; and if he have committed sins, they shall be forgiven him. Confess your faults one to another, and pray one for another, that ye may be healed. The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much. In view of these many definite Bible promises concerning healing, there can be no doubt in the reverent reader’s mind that healing is the Will of God for those who are believers in the Lord Jesus Christ. Divine Healing and the Medical Profession Because of many questions asked, it would perhaps be advisable to say a word concerning Divine Healing as distinguished from the practice of the medical profession. We have no desire whatever to discredit the physicians, a large number of whom are godly men. We hold them in high esteem. It should be obvious to anyone that the world has a need for specially trained men to teach people concerning the care of their bodies. Christ commended those who cared for the sick and wounded. (Luke 10:40). Mothers need special assistance and care at the time of the birth of their children. But at best, physicians can only assist nature; God alone can heal. When a malignant disease such as cancer, tumor, or tuberculosis fastens itself upon the body, there is little that drugs can do. We may appreciate the care that trained personnel can give people in time of sickness, but for real deliverance from organic disease, we must turn to the Lord with all our heart and not put our trust in drugs. This is all the more true of people who have trusted the Lord in the past for healing, as is well brought out in II Chron. 16:12, 13, where it declares that Asa 12
  • Faith Must Be Founded on the Word of God who had believed the Lord for many things, failed to trust the Lord for healing when he became ill. The Scripture record informs us that as a result of this error, he died. And Asa in the thirty and ninth year of his reign was diseased in his feet, until his disease was exceeding great: yet in his disease he sought not the Lord, but to the physicians. And Asa slept with his fathers. 13
  • Chapter III 3 Hindrances to Healing We are to understand that we are healed solely by the Grace of God through faith. Nothing that we may do will earn our healing, anymore than anything that we do will earn us salvation. Nevertheless, it is evident that people do things that hinder them from becoming saved, and likewise there are things that people do that hinder them from being healed. To exercise true faith we must have a conscience void of offence before God and man. A sinner may be effectively kept from a real experience of salvation because of his unwillingness to obey the Will of God. A Christian may be just as effectively kept from healing because he is unwilling to be obedient to the Lord on some line. But first let us notice our position in the Body of Christ and the relation this fact has to our physical healing. Not Discerning the Lord’s Body This concerns the unity of the members of the Body of Christ. It has been found that if faith in Christ exists, a member of one church denomination will be healed as quickly as a member of another. In fact it is believed by those who have received the Gifts of Healing that these gifts are not only for the healing of the individual Christian but also for the healing of the entire Body of Christ—thus fulfilling the prayer of Christ to the Father when He prayed, “that they may be 15
  • How to Receive Your Healing one even as we are one.” John 17:22. There can be no room for sectarianism with those who would receive Divine Healing! Why is there so much sickness in the Church? Paul gave the reason in the 11th and 12th chapters of I Corinthians. Let us consider I Cor. 11:29 and the context: For he that eateth and drinketh unworthily, eateth and drinketh damnation to himself, NOT DISCERNING THE LORD’S BODY. For this cause many are weak and sickly among you, and many sleep (have died). For if we should judge ourselves, we should not be judged ... wherefore, my brethren, when ye come together to eat, tarry one for another. This passage of course speaks of the Holy Communion, the elements of which Are symbols of the Body of Christ. (Verses 24-25). Primarily, it refers to the fact that those who partake of the Lord’s Supper should understand that these emblems are more than bread and wine, but by faith, one should see in them the Body and Blood of the Lord. Nevertheless the context shows that reference is made to the Church of Jesus Christ which too in a mystical way is the Body of Christ. The following Twelfth Chapter considers the Church as the Body of Christ. Paul declares that if we judge ourselves we shall not be judged. He told the Corinthians to tarry one for another, to care one for another, for they were members of One Body. We must therefore be on good terms with our brother who is a member of the same Body as we. Other Hindrances to Healing Besides what has been mentioned, let us note other 16
  • Hindrances to Healing hindrances that keep people from being healed. Many of the Christian people who come to the great healing services have chronic ailments—afflictions which have not given way before the ordinary prayer of faith. Let us remember the Bible says that “the curse causeless shall not come.” Prov. 26:2. Get the cause removed. The Gifts of Healing may drive the disease away, but if the cause remains, the affliction may return. 1.SOME DESIRE HEALING FOR THEIR BODY BUT ARE NOT WILLING TO SERVE GOD. Alas, that there should be any who would not willingly serve the God Who created them and Who is now willing to heal them. Jesus said to a man that had been healed, “Sin no more lest a worse thing come unto thee.” Certainly we have no desire to see a worse thing come upon a person already afflicted by a disease. Yet Christ implied that this greater misfortune might take place unless the individual resolved to serve God and live for Him after he had been healed. It is therefore a merciful thing to defer prayer for a person’s healing until he has received enough of the Word of God and reaches a place in his soul that he is willing to make a full surrender to God. Consecration is a necessity before healing. In the case of deaf mutes, we have seen this truth illustrated before large congregations. Unsaved, the deaf person has failed to receive. But after spending several days in the meeting and getting faith built up so that their spirit could receive salvation, they also received faith for healing. They were then delivered so that they could hear music, the singing, and even a watch tick. Incidentally, we might say that God expects a consecration in proportion to the light we have received. God demands more 17
  • How to Receive Your Healing from the enlightened than from a heathen. 2.SOME REFUSE TO BELIEVE UNLESS MADE PERFECTLY STRONG AT ONCE. Jesus said, “They shall lay hands on the sick and they shall recover.” Some will not believe unless a miracle is worked upon them. Nevertheless, even some of the healings in the ministry of Christ were gradual. A nobleman’s son was at the point of death. (John 4:46-54). Jesus said, “Except ye see signs and wonders ye will not believe.” But the nobleman was willing to believe whether the healing was gradual or instantaneous. He accepted the words of Christ, “Thy son liveth.” The boy was not healed instantly, but he got well. The fever left him at the seventh hour and he “began to amend.” Some people will patiently undergo operation after operation, but they will throw away all their confidence if they are not made whole in a moment of time. 3.SOME BRING IN A CASE TO PROVE HEALING TO UNBELIEVERS. We must remember that God proves Himself to faith, not to unbelief. For example, people have come to us and said, “There is a woman out in our neighborhood that is in a terrible condition. She has little faith. Her husband is an unbeliever, and the neighborhood mocks at healing. But we prevailed upon the woman to let you come and pray for her. Now if a miracle would take place, that would surely stir the neighborhood.” No approach to the Gift of God could be worse than this. God is not in the business of proving Himself to unbelief. He will do wonders, He will repeat miracles without number where there is faith, but He will do nothing for unbelief. It is 18
  • Hindrances to Healing either “believe and live” or “doubt and die.” Jesus had done mighty works in the city of Bethsaida. From it had come some of His chief disciples—Peter, Andrew, and Philip. But the city itself had remained smug in its self-righteous unbelief. Sodom and Gomorrah would have repented, so would Tyre and Sidon, had they seen the mighty works wrought in Bethsaida. Jesus condemned the city for its unbelief. (Matt. 11:20-24). Now notice a significant fact. When Jesus came to Bethsaida again, He refused to perform any miracle there. The blind man that was brought to Him was taken outside the town and healed. Even so, the atmosphere of unbelief about the city was such that Christ prayed twice before the man’s eyesight was completely restored. Nor would Christ permit further testimony to be borne in Bethsaida; its day of probation had ended. (Mark 8:22). 4.SOME RELY A LITTLE UNCONSCIOUSLY ON THEIR MERITS. We must not forget that healing is entirely through the Grace of God. “By his stripes we are healed.” There are things that we do that can hinder our healing and there are things we can do that will put us in line for healing, but there is nothing that we can do that will cause us to merit healing. Some, unconsciously, perhaps, come through the healing line relying a little on their merits. We are not healed because we have been a missionary for 30 years. We are not healed because we have suffered great pain, or are about to die. Nor do we receive deliverance because we have made great sacrifice for the cause of Christ. True, God will not forget our labor of love for Him, but we must remember at all times that we are saved and healed solely on the basis of a finished work. 19
  • How to Receive Your Healing We have no other merit than that we are redeemed children of God, therefore made eligible to eat the “Children’s Bread,” having been accepted of the Father through Christ. The youngest convert or the weakest “babe in Christ” thus has an equal right with the mature Christian to avail himself of healing. 5.SOME ARE DISOBEDIENT OR “JONAH CHRISTIANS.” Some Christians are disobedient. They are not living in the light that they have received. We must “walk in the light as he is in the light.” The ordinance of healing given to the Israelites involved an obedience to the commands of the Scripture. If thou wilt diligently hearken to the voice of the Lord thy God, and wilt do that which is right in his sight, and will give ear to his commandments, and keep all his statutes, I will put none of these diseases upon thee, which I have brought upon the Egyptians: for I am the Lord that healeth thee. Some are not obedient to the simplest commandments of the Scriptures. Some do not tithe, even though Christ said, “These ought ye to have done.” Some irregularly attend the house of God, although they find time to occupy themselves with other things. Attending a healing service and being prayed for will not atone for neglect of the command in Heb. 10:25. Some have been called for an active work in their church, but being spiritually lazy, they fail to obey the Lord. Such disobedience is sin. Prayer will not take the place of confession and the forsaking of such sin. (Read Josh. 7:10-12.) Many people cry by reason of their affliction as Jonah did. 20
  • Hindrances to Healing (Jonah 2:2-9). But only when he was willing “to forsake lying vanities” and “sacrifice” with “the voice of thanksgiving” did deliverance come. Jonah said, “I will pay that I have vowed.” Jonah had to pay a big price for running away from the Lord. That way was down, and the way from God is always down. Notice Jonah’s downward trail in his flight from the Presence of the Lord. He went DOWN to Joppa. He went DOWN into the ship. He went DOWN into the sides of the ship. He went DOWN into the sea. He went DOWN into the fish’s belly. While in the fish’s belly, he testified, “I went DOWN to the bottoms of the mountains.” He began to pray at last, “I cried by reason of mine affliction unto the Lord, and he heard me; out of the belly of hell cried I, and thou heardest my voice.” God heard Jonah when he was willing to pay his vows. He will hear you if you are willing to be obedient. 21
  • Chapter IV 4 Satan—The Cause of Sickness Sin opens the way for disease and affliction to come upon us, but from where does sickness come? If there is anything that is really clear in the Bible, it is this truth: disease and affliction come from Satan and the Kingdom of Darkness. Let us give a few scriptural illustrations. First, Job. There was a hedge about Job, and the devil could not touch him. (Job 1:10). Then came the time that God permitted Satan to afflict the patriarch. Notice that while God gave the permission, yet it was Satan who laid the boils on Job. So went Satan forth from the presence of the Lord, and smote Job with sore boils from the sole of his foot unto his crown. Job 2:7. Second, the woman with the infirmity. This woman had been bowed over for eighteen years with a SPIRIT of INFIRMITY. The Pharisees protested against Christ’s healing the woman on the Sabbath Day. The Lord, in answering the Pharisees’ hypocritical complaint, also revealed the cause of her sickness. It was Satan who had bound the woman: And ought not this woman, being a daughter of Abraham, whom Satan hath bound, lo these eighteen years, be loosed from this bond on the Sabbath day? Luke 13:16. 23
  • How to Receive Your Healing Note again when Peter is speaking of Christ, he connects the ministry of healing with deliverance from Satanic oppression: How God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Ghost and with power: who went about doing good, and healing all that were oppressed of the devil; for God was with him. Acts 10:38. Thus we see that healing was in effect, liberating people from the oppression of the devil. Nor is this just poetic language. As we witness and study the miracles of our Lord, we usually find that evil spirits were involved in the cause of the sickness. These had to be cast out before the person could get well. The Bible speaks of deaf spirits, dumb spirits, insane spirits, infirm spirits, deceiving spirits, seducing spirits, lying spirits, familiar spirits, a spirit of divination, perverse spirits, wicked spirits, unclean spirits and foul spirits. All of these have different ways of afflicting or deceiving people. The Casting Out of Demon Spirits These signs shall follow them that believe; in my name they shall cast out demons. Mark 16:17. In the course of prayer for the sick, in Divine Healing meetings, many demons are cast out. A demon is an evil spirit which immediately after being cast out desires to reenter the body. (Luke 11:24-26). Some people, through unbelief, or sin, or physical weakness of some kind are susceptible to demons. The eyes are the gateway to the soul, and it has been found advisable for people to keep their heads bowed in prayer as a 24
  • Satan—The Cause of Sickness precaution when these demon spirits are cast out. These warnings are not given to inspire fear in the hearts of people as fear is the tool of the enemy. But it is to be remembered that when powerful demon spirits are challenged, we enter to that extent on the devil’s territory. Only the power of God can cast out demons, and when that power is in action we must be in great reverence. There are, alas, those who have been known to mock at the work of casting out of demons. This is one of the most serious sins that can be committed. In fact, it borders upon the unpardonable sin. (Read Matt. 12:22-32.) On one occasion Jesus cast the devil out of one that was deaf and dumb. The Pharisees, having to explain the healing in some way, made the declaration that Christ cast out the devils by Beelzebub the prince of devils. Jesus answered them with a sharp rebuke. In the first place He said that if He cast out devils by Beelzebub, by whom did they cast them out? This silenced the Pharisees for they knew that they had no power to cast out devils. Then He went on to state that the power to cast out devils was proof that the Kingdom of God had come unto them. Furthermore, He said that Satan did not cast out Satan, for if he did his kingdom would not stand. Then finally Christ gave a solemn warning that the attributing of power that was used to cast out evil spirits to Satan was blasphemy and a sin that would never be forgiven in this world nor in the world to come. Power to Cast Out Demons Proof of the Genuineness of a Ministry In the words of Christ, the power to cast out demons is an 25
  • How to Receive Your Healing attestation of the genuineness of a ministry, and skeptics and doubters should by all means be warned against saying anything disrespectful toward the work of the Spirit in the casting out of demons. Such may well result in the committing of the unpardonable sin. We are glad to note, however, that we have found only a few that have doubted the work of God. On the other hand, people everywhere have glorified God because He has revealed His power in delivering those who have been bound by Satan. Are Devils to be Cast Into the Pit? It has often been asked, why that with the casting out of evil spirits, the demons are not bound and cast into the pit? This question should not be answered carelessly. It is perhaps true that demons may be bound for a period of time, but whether they can be indiscriminately sent into the pit, cannot be certainly ascertained. Jesus spoke to one demon commanding him to come out of the person and to enter no more into him. It is apparent that Jesus took perfect control of the demons that were cast out and they could do nothing except that He suffered them to do so. However, when the demons of the demoniac protested against being sent into the deep (or the pit), declaring that the time of their punishment had not yet come, He suffered them to enter into the swine. (Mark 5:1-13). Indeed, it would appear from the words of the Lord, that demons ordinarily are left free to wander about until they find a body that they may enter, or even re-enter the one from whence they were cast out. Let us notice the passage in Luke 26
  • Satan—The Cause of Sickness 11:24-26. When the unclean spirit is gone out of a man, he walketh through dry places seeking rest; and finding none, he saith, I will return unto my house whence I came out. And when he cometh he findeth it swept and garnished. Then goeth he and taketh to him seven other spirits more wicked than himself; and they enter in and dwell there: and the last state of that man is worse than the first. Summary of Habits of Demons From these Scriptures certain facts concerning demons and their habits emerge: 1.That demons seek to inhabit human beings, and when cast out immediately seek another human abode, or try to re- enter the one from whence they were cast out. 2.They will not willingly leave a human body. Demons do not cast each other out, but rather invite other demons to join in their habitation. (Luke 11:11-17, 18, 26). 3.Only the power of God can cast out demons, and a ministry in which this power is manifested to cast them out is an attestation of its genuineness. (Matt. 12:25-28). 4.In the casting out of demons, faith should be exercised against their attempts to enter the body from whence they came or into others nearby. In the case of the deaf and dumb child, Christ not only cast out the demon but commanded it to “enter no more into him.” (Mark 9:25). In the healing services the audience can assist greatly in 27
  • How to Receive Your Healing this matter if they will keep bowed in prayer and faith. 5.The power of God can cast out a demon, also bind and send it into the pit, yet there is little record in the Scriptures that Jesus actually did so. On the other hand, he warned that a demon, when it was cast out, immediately sought to enter another body. Failing in this, he took other demons more wicked than himself, and made an attempt to return into the body out of which he had been cast. Jesus showed that this attempt by demons might well be successful if the individual fails to obey God, and the Spirit of the Lord does not dwell in his heart and life. The Important Matter of Keeping One’s Healing This last consideration brings us to the thought of whether it is possible to lose one’s healing. This matter is really of tremendous importance, for we have already seen that Jesus plainly taught that it is possible for one to lose his healing. Almost every Christian will testify that after they were saved, glorious as their experience might have been, sooner or later the enemy was back to tempt and even to make them believe that they had not been saved. Likewise, as we have seen in the case of demon possession, the demon is back sooner or later to recover, if possible, what he has lost. To be forewarned is to be forearmed. If the individual will obey the Scriptures by resisting the enemy, the devil will leave, but if he gives in to him, Satan will rob him of his deliverance. James 4:7 declares, “Resist the devil and he will flee from you.” If when the enemy brings symptoms to us, tempting us to believe that the 28
  • Satan—The Cause of Sickness old affliction is to return upon us, we resist him and rebuke the thing, we shall find that our deliverance is complete. We must let Christ and His Kingdom reign in our lives. The man in whom the demons were cast out, continued on in his old way. He did not serve God or live for Him. Consequently, his disobedience was an invitation for the enemy to return. There are those who only attend church during a revival meeting. They are unfaithful in their service to God, and continue to indulge in a worldly life, partaking in questionable things on the devil’s territory. Soon they may be back in the toils of the enemy again. Let us remember the words of our Lord when He said, “Behold thou art made whole; sin no more, lest a worse thing come unto thee.” 29
  • Chapter V 5 Further Instructions for Keeping Your Healing We have seen that while Satan may be cast out through the prayer of faith or through the Gifts of Healing, there remains the possibility that he will return. We have also seen that the most important instruction is that the individual will, after the healing, continue to serve the Lord and fill his life with the things of God so that when the evil spirit returns he will find no room for re-entrance. There are other things that we might mention that are important for the person to keep in mind after he is healed. 1.DON’T GO BACK AMONG UNBELIEVERS. We know that the Church of Jesus Christ includes all blood-bought Christians. When one is healed he is to go back to his own church and witness to what God has done for him, and to work zealously for the cause of Christ and the Kingdom of God. However, if his testimony is not received, or if unbelief is expressed concerning Divine Healing, be assured that there is a group of people that do not come under the Bible definition of true believers. (Mark 16:15, 18). To mingle and fellowship with such people will result in the undermining of that person’s faith. Soon the suggestion of unbelief may take hold of the individual and the door will be open for Satan to return. 31
  • How to Receive Your Healing Remember that Peter had bold faith and great determination to serve Christ until he got with the wrong crowd and began to warm himself at the devil’s fire. When temptation came, he was swept off his feet and he even denied his Lord. Only his hasty retreat from these unbelievers, his true repentance and the gracious forgiveness of Christ, saved Peter from the tragic consequences of his error. Leave the old crowd which does not believe. Someone says, “I can’t leave all my friends that I have known for years and years.” If that is the case, then that person knows little about the call of the gospel, and is not ready to ask the Lord for healing. Jesus said, “Whosoever will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me.” Mark 8:34. Again He said, “He that taketh not his cross, and followeth after me, is not worthy of me.” Matt. 10:37. It is good to count the cost before we begin to follow Christ. 2.SOME RECEIVE THEIR HEALING BUT FAIL TO RECOGNIZE IT. There are people who receive healing but fail, because of the lack of instruction, to recognize it. This is especially true of those who have growth diseases. Remember that the Gifts of Healing ordinarily drive out the disease or the afflicting spirit. If the growth be a tumor or cancer, it must now pass from the body. In so doing it will sometimes make the person sick. A stomach cancer when it comes loose, may cause the person to vomit violently. Bowel cancers will sometimes pass from the body causing pain. In all cases the persons should praise God and rejoice for they may know that they are getting their healing. To doubt one’s healing at such a time is sure to open the way for the devil to return. We are enjoined to 32
  • Further Instructions for Keeping Your Healing resist the devil and he will flee from us. Praise will cause the devil to flee. The secret to many a victory is in the spirit of praise. 3.SOME CANNOT MAINTAIN THEIR HEALING BECAUSE THEY CONTINUE TO BREAK THE LAWS OF HEALTH. After God gave the covenant of healing to the Children of Israel, He gave them special laws concerning sterilization, recuperation and quarantine. Some people eat too much. They eat irregularly. They neglect the general laws of health. Some overdo. Others worry and fret and do not trust the Lord. Still others are not able to rule themselves and give way to frequent fits of anger, jealousy, bitterness, pride, unclean habits. All these open the way for the enemy to return. Saul’s temper and jealousy, and disobedience opened the way for an evil spirit to come upon him. (I Sam. 16:14-15). Cast them all out of your life, Christian friend. Spiritual victory leads the way to physical victory. Epaphroditus was a servant of God that labored hard for the cause of Christ. Yet he very nearly died from the strain of overdoing, although it was done in the worthiest of causes, zeal for the Lord’s work. Paul had the Gifts of Healing, but that didn’t immediately cure the grievous illness that overtook this godly man. Our bodies must be taken care of whether in the service of Christ or in secular labor. Paul speaking of Epaphroditus, the servant of God, declared that, “Because for the work of Christ he was nigh unto death, not regarding his life, to supply your lack of service toward me.” Phil. 2:30. Many a pastor or pastor’s wife has become ill through the strain and burden of Christian work. Perhaps 33
  • How to Receive Your Healing more may be accomplished by working with all our hearts and might while we are working, and then getting away from it all for little periods of time that our bodies might recuperate. The Gifts of Healing will drive out the disease and the natural forces of the body will restore our strength. But if our natural forces have all been depleted or dissipated, our body is not able to co-operate with the Spirit of God. Resist the Suggestion of the Enemy Just as Satan will try to bring the suggestion of evil to our minds, and our victory is in recognizing the source and resisting it, so Satan will attempt to bring the suggestion of sickness to our bodies in the form of symptoms of some disease. If we recognize the source, we shall resist and refuse to have it. If not, we may fall heir to the thing that is not ours and become sick again. God Wishes Us to Have Something Better Than Repeated Healings It is not the Will of God that a Christian should become a continual object for healing. Some testify to a score of healings and are sick again. This does not glorify God any more than for a person to be saved, and then to fall from Grace repeatedly and have to be restored each time. We have noticed that in the Covenant of Healing given to the Children of Israel, God declared that if they obey the voice of the Lord, none of these diseases would come upon them that had been brought upon the Egyptians. He promised to “take sickness away from 34
  • Further Instructions for Keeping Your Healing the midst" of them. John the Beloved said, “Beloved, I wish above all things that thou mayest prosper and be in health even as thy soul prospereth.” That is the Will of God. God made man in His own image, and gave him dominion over the earth. He was told to subdue and bring life on it under his subjection. Surely this includes the diabolical forms of life that the devil has brought upon the human race in the form of disease. Let us rise up in the Name of the Lord Jesus Christ and claim the victory. Refuse to give assent to Satan’s evil suggestion. The Church is the Body of Christ and certainly not a fit subject for the diseases of the enemy. Claim your inheritance in the Name of the Lord. “He whom the Son sets free is free indeed.” Amen. 35
  • Chapter VI 6 Boundaries of the Gifts of Healing From the healing standpoint, every disease and affliction has gone before the power of the gifts. Malignant cancers have melted away. People condemned to die by some terrible disease have been made whole and are now testifying and praising God for His healing power. The deaf, dumb and blind have heard, spoken and seen. Communities have been made God- conscious and healing-conscious. Nevertheless, there are definite bounds in the purpose and nature of the Gifts of Healing. The very fact that the word “gifts” is in the plural implies that one Gift may be different from another and may function differently. Moreover the Gifts of Healing are not intended to take the place of the Gift of Miracles. If this were so, there would be no place for the Gift of Miracles. Let us notice something of the design, purpose and working of the Gifts of Healing. Not to Restore Youth to Old Age 1.The purpose of the Gifts of Healing is not to restore youth to old age. True enough there have been those who have been healed who have felt 20 to 30 years younger. Such testimonies are not uncommon. Moreover, there are special promises in the Scriptures which speak of the renewing of 37
  • How to Receive Your Healing youth. “Who satisfieth thy mouth with good things; so that thy youth is renewed like the eagle’s.” Psalms 103:5. However, this is spoken apart from the promise of healing in verse three. There is such a thing—for those who are able to understand it—there is such a thing as living so close to God that one’s youth is daily renewed. Moses understood and appropriated this blessing. (Deut. 34:7). So did Caleb. (Joshua 14:11). Nevertheless, such a blessing does not ordinarily come through Divine Healing, and a discussion of it is beyond the scope of the present article. Suffice it to say that some people have broken the laws of health over a period of years, and even now are doing the same, yet they expect a miracle of healing to atone for all this. Not to Replace Missing Organs 2.The Gift of Healing does not ordinarily replace an organ of the body that has been completely removed. Usually, Divine Healing kills the disease that is injuring the body, after which the person gets well. However, there are many exceptions. One woman that we know had a new tooth grow where the old one had been extracted. New ear drums have been formed and certain organs of the body which have been removed have been miraculously replaced. Thus does the Gift of Healing at times cross over into the range of miracles. There is no limit to God. Is there anything too hard for the Lord? Nevertheless the usual range of the Gift of Healing is to heal that which is sick. A diseased arm may be healed. But ordinarily an arm that has been cut off does not grow on, through the Gift of Healing. An eye with a 38
  • Boundaries of the Gifts of Healing cataract may be restored with full vision, but one in which the eyeball is missing usually is not made to see through working of the Gift of Healing. Of course, such is possible, and cases have happened in which a person suffering with such a misfortune has been made to see. But the deliverance came through a creative miracle rather than through healing. In one such case, Christ first put clay on the man’s eyes, indicating that this man who was blind since birth required something created within the eye socket. It is to be remembered that man was created from the dust of the earth. Creative faith will, of course, accomplish anything. Natural Processes Necessary 3.Divine Healing does not take the place of the natural processes of life. Take the example of a person whose mind never has developed and at the age of 20 still has the mind of a child two years old. Divine Healing ordinarily would not in an instant give the child an intelligence of a 20-year- old. At the very best it would require at least 18 years that have been lost to accomplish this, for every person must develop mentally year by year. However, no doubt there are cases of straight demon possession in which, if the power of Satan were ejected, the individual might be restored to a normal condition quite rapidly. In such cases the brain development has, to a great extent, already taken place. 4.The Gift of Divine Healing is not to obviate the need of faith by the sick person. Many have little or no faith, yet because they see others healed, they come to be prayed for 39
  • How to Receive Your Healing with a sort of superstitious hope that they may receive something. Paul, no doubt, had the Gift of Healing, but only after he perceived that the lame man had faith to be healed did he say, “Stand upright on thy feet.” Acts 14:8-10. “Faith cometh by hearing and hearing by the word of God.” Hence the teaching of the Word is necessary for one’s faith to reach out for Divine Healing. Sometimes people assume that because one has the Gifts of Healing, there is no necessity for the sick person to make any preparation for his healing. In almost every case that Jesus healed, He first gave the individual instructions that fitted his particular need. Most of those who will not or cannot take the time to receive the needed instructions are poor candidates for healing. 40
