  • 1. The Sun 26.1 Energy From the Sun Forces in Balance Atmosphere Features
  • 2. Energy From the Sun
    • Sun Give of Electromagnetic Radiation = Energy that is given off in Waves
    • Ex. Ultraviolet Light = Sun Burn
    • Energy for the sun = Nuclear Fusion in the core…
    • Small nuclei combine with other small nuclei making a massive nuclei & releasing lots of energy
  • 3. Fusion Reaction
    • Deuterium-deuterium reactions - Two deuterium atoms combine to form a helium-3 atom and a neutron.
  • 4. Radio Waves Visible Light X-rays Radiation Microwaves
  • 5. Forces in Balance
    • The sun is stable because of two forces
    • The pressure of nuclear fusion pushing outward
    • The force of gravity pulling inward
  • 6. Atmosphere
    • Sun’s Atmosphere is made up of 3 layer
    • Photosphere = Inner layer of atmosphere —
    • The visible surface of the sun —
    • Has a bubbly appearance called Granules
  • 7. Chromosphere
    • Chromosphere = Middle layer of atmosphere—
    • Name = sphere of color can be seen when photosphere is blocked
  • 8. Corona
    • Corona = Outer layer of atmosphere—
    • Gasses in layer a very hot 1million Kelvins—
    • Beginning of solar winds = charged particle that flow out from the Corona—
    • Earth magnetic field deflects cause the auroras

  • 9. Features
    • Sunspots = Areas of gas in the photosphere that are cooler than surrounding gases
    • Prominences = are huge loops of gas that erupt from sunspot regions
    • Solar Flares = a sudden release of energy from sun
