SAP R/3 ARCHITECTURE
The R/3 architecture is comprised of application and database servers. The application servers house the software and the database servers handle document updates and master file databases. The system can support an unlimited number of servers and a variety of hardware configurations.
SAP R/3 is based on various hardware and software architectures, running on most types of UNIX, on Windows NT and OS/400.
SAP R/3 runs on several databases Oracle, Adabas D, Informix, DB2 for UNIX, DB2/400, Microsoft's SQL Server 6.0.
SAP R/3 is a client/server based application, utilizing a 3-tiered model. A presentation layer, or client, interfaces with the user. The application layer houses all the business-specific logic, and the database layer records and stores all the information about the system, including transactional and configuration data.
SAP R/3 functionality is structured using its own proprietary language called ABAP (Advanced Business Application Programming). ABAP, or ABAP/4 is a fourth generation language (4GL), geared towards the creation of simple, yet powerful programs.
R/3 also offers a complete development environment where developers can either modify existing SAP code to modify existing functionality or develop their own functions, whether reports or complete transactional systems within the SAP framework.
The new integrated solution offers customers real-time shipping and tracking functions, from order entry through package delivery, all from within R/3. SAP customers will be able to streamline their supply chain by reducing inventory management and resource costs.
A FedEx tracking number, as well as freight charges, can be obtained and assigned immediately via R/3 order entry while a customer order is being placed. Subsequent order status and package status is available immediately as the package moves by FedEx from an R/3 customer£s shipping dock through the FedEx delivery network to its final destination.
