First F-35C Fly-In Arrestment
The F-35C carrier variant piloted by Navy Lt. Chris Tabert completed its first fly-in arrestment into the
MK-7 arresting gear cable at Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst, N.J on 10 August 2012. Using an
interim arresting hook system, an engineering team, comprised of F-35 Joint Program Office, Naval
Air Systems Command and industry officials conducted tests to assess cable dynamics, aircraft loads
and performance. During testing, CF-3 completed five of eight attempts into the arresting gear. The
completion of these tests enabled the program to improve the redesigned arresting hook system.
Engineering design reviews will continue and culminate in initial sea trials projected for spring 2014. August
