  • "The medium is the message" is a phrase coined by Marshall McLuhan meaning that the form of a medium embeds itself in the message, creating a symbiotic relationship by which the medium influences how the message is perceived. McLuhan proposes that a medium itself, not the content it carries, should be the focus of study. He said that a medium affects the society in which it plays a role not only by the content delivered over the medium, but also by the characteristics of the medium itself.

    • 4. Catalyst: Driving productivity of the connected employee   New and novel devices will continue to meld with clever and sophisticated apps in ways that business and IT leaders have not yet been able to imagine.  4 Every enterprise employee is first and foremost a consumer, so the impact of consumer information and communications technologies will affect even more businesses and institutions as the workforce engages through devices and apps in 2014. When combined with new web services and experimental external data sources, the resulting IT cocktail will have unpredictable and potentially disruptive market effects. © Copyright Ovum. • 5. Key messages:   Employees are clamoring for next-generation collaboration solutions that embrace human-centered design and do a better job of meeting their particular needs.  Enterprise social networking products are evolving rapidly beyond the activity stream as vendors seek to differentiate their products in a crowded market.  File sync and share solutions reshape collaborative activities by making documents and application data securely available and actionable on any device.  5 The relationship between employee, IT department, and technology/services providers generates both contention and opportunity. Microsoft is attempting to find its stride as it transitions from software and services to a devices and services company: Microsoft 3.0. © Copyright Ovum. All rights reserved. • 6. The Ovum View:   As a result, empowered employees are self-selecting applications on their own devices and using cloud services to get the job done.  Experienced CIOs have seen this occur once before when the PC displaced the green screen, and they are now ready to manage the transition once more: from siloed to social; programs to apps; and on-premise to cloud.  6 Employee frustration and operational latency are increasing as the workforce tries to do today’s job with yesterday’s tools. Continued growth in the use of employee-owned devices and self-selected applications is changing the face of end-user computing, and nowhere else is this more evident than in the enterprise collaboration market. © Copyright Ovum. • 7. Our Age of Anxiety is, in great part, the result of trying to do today’s jobs with yesterday’s tools. We shape our tools, and thereafter our tools shape us. • 8. EMPLOYEES CLAMOR FOR NEXT-GENERATION COLLABORATION SOLUTIONS  Email is considered a blunt instrument when fast-paced, multiparty collaboration is required.  Enterprise collaboration vendors switch to a "mobile first" strategy.  4G networks, generous mobile data plans, and affordable roaming tariffs change the way people work. 8 © Copyright Ovum. • 9. RAPIDLY EVOLVING ENTERPRISE SOCIAL NETWORKING PRODUCTS  Enterprise social networking solutions provide a real alternative to “doing business by email”.  The enterprise social network provides a platform from which organizations can address the human-centered needs of employees.  Enterprise social networking is a feature of connected business processes and enterprise applications. 9 © Copyright Ovum.
