Project Manager How do you know if you’ve got a good one?

The traits
They
are alive – and you know what I mean
can tell you who gets to say the project is a success
have clear, succinct and brief success criteria – if someone has a long list, not good.
can tell you what will have happened when that person is declaring success
have a simple, high level plan that rarely leaves their side
can think through in their head at least the high level impact of change
have a schedule of what the people are doing on ‘their’ project and also what those people are doing on other projects
build relationships throughout the organisation and use informal channels to get things done
will do the paperwork but that isn’t what drives the project
have a very clear compass of delivering the outcome that the person who gets to declare success wants
spend most of their day with people – not their computer
update about what is going on not how much slippage has occurred (by default)
act on risks to minimise – not just a list
ruffle feathers and never take no as a final answer the first time
can tell you where the budget is up to

But most importantly, they guide and drive to the success criteria.
