  2. 2. Overview <ul><li>Humans have been using toilets for centuries with the first primitive toilets dating all the way back to 2500 B.C.. Since then the toilet has undergone many changes, and evolved into the modern masterpiece that is now used by Americans everyday. This project will focus on the toilets technological and social history in the United States. </li></ul>
  3. 3. Technological Advancements <ul><li>The First toilets in the United States were far from the modern devises used today, but were instead simple chamber pots brought to the New World by the colonists. </li></ul><ul><li>Eventually, slightly more dignified out houses began to be utilized. </li></ul><ul><li>Alexander Cumming patented the first flushing devise in 1775, and is therefore often given credit for inventing the modern flush toilet. </li></ul><ul><li>This new flush toilet was expensive, and consequently it was only used in the nicest homes and the most luxurious hotels. </li></ul>

Technological Advancements Cont. <ul><li>However, many places were utilizing a more popular wash away style commode that would release water from a tank above the restroom and wash the contents of the toilet away. </li></ul><ul><li>Many parts of the United States experimented with different kinds of premature sewer systems in the early 19 th century, but Chicago is credited with having the first complete sewage system in America which was designed by E.S. Chesbrough in 1885. </li></ul>
