Foundation Stone #11: Resurrection

 1. 1.

12 Foundation Stones

of Christian Faith

RLBruderick, June 15, 2011 Foundation Stone #11: Resurrection from Physical Death
 2. 2.

Hebrews 6:1-3 Therefore let us leave the elementary teachings about Christ and go on to maturity, not laying again the foundation of repentance from acts that lead to death, and of faith in God, 2 instruction about baptisms, the laying on of hands, the resurrection of the dead , and eternal judgment. 3 And God permitting, we will do so. (NIV)

 3. 3.

所以,我们应当离开基督道理的开端,竭力进到完全的地步,不必再立根基,就如那懊悔死行,信靠神、各样洗礼、按手之礼、 死人复活 ,以及永远审判各等教训。

 6. 6.

Q1: What does “resurrected from physical death” mean?

A1: This means the afterlife: After a person dies on earth, their soul continues to live in the spiritual world. It means that death is not really the end of life.

R1: M

 7. 7.

John 11;21 “Lord,” Martha said to Jesus, “if you had been here, my brother would not have died. 22 But I know that even now God will give you whatever you ask.” 23 Jesus said to her, “Your brother will rise again.” 24 Martha answered, “I know he will rise again in the resurrection at the last day.” 25 Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in me will live, even though he dies; 26 and Whoever lives and believes in me will never die. Do you believe this?” 27 “Yes, Lord,” she told him, “I believe that you are the Christ, b the Son of God, who was to come into the world.”

 8. 8.

Q2:

Does this mean that everyone will live forever?

 9. 9.

Q2: Does this mean that everyone will live forever?

A2: Yes, but there are two kinds of life: a life of comfort and joy; and a life of pain and suffering.

R2: M

 10. 10.

Matthew 25:46 “Then they will go away to eternal punishment, but the righteous to eternal life.”

 11. 11.

Q3:

The Bible sometimes mentions the physically dead being raised back to life by a prophet or by Jesus. Is this the same meaning?

 12. 12.

Q3: The Bible sometimes mentions the physically dead being raised back to life by a prophet or by Jesus. Is this the same meaning?

A3: No. Those people who were dead and brought back to life by a miracle eventually died, again.

R3: M

 13. 13.

Luke 6:

(NIV)

 14. 14.

Q4:

When does the Bible begin to tell us that people will live after death?

 15. 15.

Q4: When does the Bible begin to tell us that people will live after death?

A4: Very early. Enoch was the first person mentioned in the Bible as someone who didn’t die, but was directly taken into the presence of God.

R4: M

 16. 16.

Genesis 5:18 When Jared had lived 162 years, he became the father of Enoch. 19 And after he became the father of Enoch, Jared lived 800 years and had other sons and daughters. 20 Altogether, Jared lived 962 years, and then he died. 21 When Enoch had lived 65 years, he became the father of Methuselah. 22 And after he became the father of Methuselah, Enoch walked with God 300 years and had other sons and daughters. 23 Altogether, Enoch lived 365 years. 24 Enoch walked with God; then he was no more, because God took him away.

 17. 17.

Q5:

In what kind of places will our souls live in after our bodies die?

 18. 18.

Q5: In what kind of places will our souls live in after our bodies die?

A5: The Bible talks about just two kinds of places, but uses various names: Sheol, the Pit, the Abyss, Darkness, or Hell and Abraham’s Bosom, Paradise, or Heaven.

R5: M

 19. 19.

Luke 16:19“There was a rich man who was dressed in purple and fine linen and lived in luxury every day. 20 At his gate was laid a beggar named Lazarus, covered with sores 21 and longing to eat what fell from the rich man’s table. Even the dogs came and licked his sores. 22 “The time came when the beggar died and the angels carried him to Abraham’s side. The rich man also died and was buried. 23 In hell, where he was in torment, he looked up and saw Abraham far away, with Lazarus by his side. 24 So he called to him, ‘Father Abraham, have pity on me and send Lazarus to dip the tip of his finger in water and cool my tongue, because I am in agony in this fire.’ 25 “But Abraham replied, ‘Son, remember that in your lifetime you received your good things, while Lazarus received bad things, but now he is comforted here and you are in agony. 26 And besides all this, between us and you a great chasm has been fixed, so that those who want to go from here to you cannot, nor can anyone cross over from there to us.’ 27 “He answered, ‘Then I beg you, father, send Lazarus to my father’s house, 28 for I have five brothers. Let him warn them, so that they will not also come to this place of torment.’ 29 “Abraham replied, ‘They have Moses and the Prophets; let them listen to them.’ 30 “ ‘No, father Abraham,’ he said, ‘but if someone from the dead goes to them, they will repent.’ 31 “He said to him, ‘If they do not listen to Moses and the Prophets, they will not be convinced even if someone rises from the dead.’ ”

 20. 20.

Q6:

After we die, is the place we go to the final place?

 21. 21.

Q6: After we die, is the place we go to the final place?

A6: Probably not. The Bible seems to have a temporary place, where people wait until the final judgment day, and a permanent place, where people will spend all of eternity. Both places have two separate areas, though – a beautiful place and a terrible place.

R6: M

 22. 22.

Matthew 25: 31 “When the Son of Man comes in his glory, and all the angels with him, he will sit on his throne in heavenly glory. 32 All the nations will be gathered before him, and he will separate the people one from another as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats. 33 He will put the sheep on his right and the goats on his left. 34 “Then the King will say to those on his right, ‘Come, you who are blessed by my Father; take your inheritance, the kingdom prepared for you since the creation of the world. 35 For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, 36 I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me.’ 37 “Then the righteous will answer him, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you something to drink? 38 When did we see you a stranger and invite you in, or needing clothes and clothe you? 39 When did we see you sick or in prison and go to visit you?’ 40 “The King will reply, ‘I tell you the truth, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers of mine, you did for me.’

 23. 23.

Matthew 25: 41 “Then he will say to those on his left, ‘Depart from me, you who are cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels. 42 For I was hungry and you gave me nothing to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me nothing to drink, 43 I was a stranger and you did not invite me in, I needed clothes and you did not clothe me, I was sick and in prison and you did not look after me.’ 44 “They also will answer, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry or thirsty or a stranger or needing clothes or sick or in prison, and did not help you?’ 45 “He will reply, ‘I tell you the truth, whatever you did not do for one of the least of these, you did not do for me.’ 46“Then they will go away to eternal punishment, but the righteous to eternal life.”

 24. 24.

Q7:

What do people do in the afterlife?

 25. 25.

Q7: What do people do in the afterlife?

A7: Feast, sing, worship, …

R7: M

 26. 26.

Matthew 8:11 I say to you that many will come from the east and the west, and will take their places at the feast with Abraham, Isaac and Jacob in the kingdom of heaven. 12 But the subjects of the kingdom will be thrown outside, into the darkness, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.”

Matthew 22:1 Jesus spoke to them again in parables, saying: 2 “The kingdom of heaven is like a king who prepared a wedding banquet for his son. 3 He sent his servants to those who had been invited to the banquet to tell them to come, but they refused to come.

 27. 27.

Q8:

What don’t people do in the afterlife?

 28. 28.

Q8: What don’t people do in the afterlife?

A8: Be married or get married, cry, hurt, die, …

R8: M

 29. 29.

Luke 20:34 Jesus replied, “The people of this age marry and are given in marriage. 35 But those who are considered worthy of taking part in that age and in the resurrection from the dead will neither marry nor be given in marriage, 36 and they can no longer die; for they are like the angels. They are God’s children, since they are children of the resurrection. 37 But in the account of the bush, even Moses showed that the dead rise, for he calls the Lord ‘the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob.’ 38 He is not the God of the dead, but of the living, for to him all are alive.”

 30. 30.

Q9:

Has anyone seen Heaven and described it?

 31. 31.

Q9: Has anyone seen Heaven and described it?

A9: Once, Moses and Elijah visited for a short time. Then, of course, Jesus died, came back to life, and told us a few things. Later, the apostle John had many visions of Heaven and the future.

R9: Matthew 17:1-9; Revelation 4:2-11

 32. 32.

Matthew 17:1-9 After 6 days Jesus took with him Peter, James and John the brother of James, and led them up a high mountain by themselves. There he was transfigured before them. His face shone like the sun, and his clothes became as white as the light. Just then there appeared before them Moses and Elijah, talking with Jesus. Peter said to Jesus, “Lord, it is good for us to be here. If you wish, I will put up 3 shelters— 1 for you, 1 for Moses and 1 for Elijah.” While he was still speaking, a bright cloud enveloped them, and a voice from the cloud said, “This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased. Listen to him!” When the disciples heard this, they fell facedown to the ground, terrified. But Jesus came and touched them. “Get up,” he said. “Don’t be afraid.” When they looked up, they saw no one except Jesus. As they were coming down the mountain, Jesus instructed them, “Don’t tell anyone what you have seen, until the Son of Man has been raised from the dead.”

 33. 33.

John 20:19-20 On the evening of that first day of the week, when the disciples were together, with the doors locked for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood among them and said, “Peace be with you!” After he said this, he showed them his hands and side. The disciples were overjoyed when they saw the Lord.

 34. 34.

Revelation 4:2-7 At once I was in the Spirit, and there before me was a throne in heaven with someone sitting on it. And the one who sat there had the appearance of jasper and carnelian. A rainbow, resembling an emerald, encircled the throne. Surrounding the throne were 24 other thrones, and seated on them were 24 elders. They were dressed in white and had crowns of gold on their heads. From the throne came flashes of lightning, rumblings and peals of thunder. Before the throne, 7 lamps were blazing. These are the 7 spirits of God. Also before the throne there was what looked like a sea of glass, clear as crystal. In the center, around the throne, were 4 living creatures, and they were covered with eyes, in front and in back. The first living creature was like a lion, the second was like an ox, the third had a face like a man, the fourth was like a flying eagle.

 35. 35.

Revelation 4:8-11 Each of the 4 living creatures had 6 wings and was covered with eyes all around, even under his wings. Day and night they never stop saying:

“ Holy, holy, holy is the Lord God Almighty, who was, and is, and is to come.”

Whenever the living creatures give glory, honor and thanks to him who sits on the throne and who lives for ever and ever, the 24 elders fall down before him who sits on the throne, and worship him who lives for ever and ever. They lay their crowns before the throne and say:

“ You are worthy, our Lord and God, to receive glory and honor and power, for you created all things, and by your will they were created and have their being.”

 36. 36.

Q10:

What will happen to Earth in the future? Will there always be people living on it?

 37. 37.

Q10: What will happen to Earth?

A10: First, it will be destroyed by fire. Then there will be a new earth and a new heaven.

R10: II Peter 3: 9-13; Revelation 21:1-5

 38. 38.

II Peter 3: 9-13 The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise, as some understand slowness. He is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance. But the day of the Lord will come like a thief. The heavens will disappear with a roar; the elements will be destroyed by fire, and the earth and everything in it will be laid bare. Since everything will be destroyed in this way, what kind of people ought you to be? You ought to live holy and godly lives as you look forward to the day of God and speed its coming. That day will bring about the destruction of the heavens by fire, and the elements will melt in the heat. But in keeping with his promise we are looking forward to a new heaven and a new earth, the home of righteousness.

 39. 39.

Revelation 21:1-5 Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and there was no longer any sea. I saw the Holy City, the new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride beautifully dressed for her husband. And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, “Now the dwelling of God is with men, and he will live with them. They will be his people, and God himself will be with them and be their God. He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away.” He who was seated on the throne said, “I am making everything new!” Then he said, “Write this down, for these words are trustworthy and true.”

 40. 40.

Q11:

How can a person enter the Kingdom of Heaven?

 41. 41.

Q11: How can a person enter the Kingdom of Heaven?

A11: Jesus gave many answers to this question, but basically, those who overcome the world by believing every word of Jesus Christ, having been truly born again, as demonstrated by their love for God and their neighbors, will live forever.

R11: John 3:3-6,16; Matthew 25: 31-40; Revelation 21:7

 42. 42.

John 3:3-6 In reply Jesus declared, “I tell you the truth, no one can see the kingdom of God unless he is born again.” “How can a man be born when he is old?” Nicodemus asked. “Surely he cannot enter a second time into his mother’s womb to be born!” Jesus answered, “I tell you the truth, no one can enter the kingdom of God unless he is born of water and the Spirit. Flesh gives birth to flesh, but the Spirit gives birth to spirit.

John 3:16 “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.

 43. 43.

Matthew 25: 32-40 All the nations will be gathered before him, and he will separate the people one from another as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats. He will put the sheep on his right and the goats on his left. “Then the King will say to those on his right, ‘Come, you who are blessed by my Father; take your inheritance, the kingdom prepared for you since the creation of the world. For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me.’ … “The King will reply, ‘I tell you the truth, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers of mine, you did for me.’

 44. 44.

Revelation 21:7 He who overcomes will inherit all this, and I will be his God and he will be my son.

 45. 45.

Q12:

Who will not enter the Kingdom of Heaven?

 46. 46.

Q12: Who will not enter the Kingdom of Heaven?

A12: Bad people: those who don’t believe in Jesus Christ and have no love for others will die forever.

R12: Revelation 21:8; Matthew 25:45,46

 47. 47.

Revelation 21:8 But the cowardly, the unbelieving, the vile, the murderers, the sexually immoral, those who practice magic arts, the idolaters and all liars—their place will be in the fiery lake of burning sulfur. This is the second death.”

Matthew 25:45,46 “He will reply, ‘I tell you the truth, whatever you did not do for one of the least of these, you did not do for me.’ “Then they will go away to eternal punishment, but the righteous to eternal life.”
