Munchausen DESCRIPTION <ul><li>Someone who has Munchausen disorder makes themselves ill to get doctors’ attention </li></ul><ul><li>This is different from a Hypochondriac because a hypochondriac thinks they really are sick, when a person with Munchausen actually makes themselves sick on purpose </li></ul><ul><li>They don’t have to make only themselves ill, it could be a mother who makes their child sick to get the medical attention (these specific cases are called Munchausen by Proxy) </li></ul>

Munchausen <ul><li>CAUSES </li></ul><ul><li>Nobody knows for sure, but there are both biological and psychological influences </li></ul><ul><li>The person may have been abused/neglected or some sort of traumatic experience in their childhood </li></ul><ul><li>Low self-esteem </li></ul><ul><li>SYMPTOMS </li></ul><ul><li>Repeated Dr.’s visits with no unrelated sicknesses. </li></ul><ul><li>Multiple surgeries that didn’t help illness </li></ul><ul><li>Having multiple doctors </li></ul><ul><li>Knowledge of medical terms </li></ul>

Munchausen DIAGNOSIS <ul><li>It is very hard to diagnose because the person already lies about symptoms </li></ul><ul><li>Doctors have to have the suspicion and then check to make sure there isn’t any other explanation for supposed sickness – physical and/or mental </li></ul><ul><li>If they can’t find a mental reason, then they refer patient to psychologist and have them analyzed </li></ul><ul><li>Then they check the standard medical reference book of the country and time period to make sure that it is Munchausen </li></ul>

Munchausen TREATMENT <ul><li>Most people with Munchausen Syndrome don’t want to seek help, thusly making it difficult to treat it </li></ul><ul><li>No medications </li></ul><ul><li>Psychotherapy and habit changes </li></ul><ul><ul><li>The patient has to first stop making up fictitious illness and make an effort to get better </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>They try to make connections between past experiences </li></ul></ul>
