  • Education On Demand and within Your Hands HARNESS TODAY’S NEWEST TECHNOLOGIES AND DEVICES FOR TEACHING, LEARNING, AND WORKFORCE DEVELOPMENT Organization Effectiveness and Strategic Initiatives www.TBRMobile.org
  • Mobile Apps Presentation Summary PRESENTED BY: Dr. Robbie K. Melton, 1st App-ologist February, 2014
  • eReaders SmartPhones Tablets Apps “Education On-Demand ~ In Your Hands” Latest Innovations & Best Practices Regarding the Use of Mobile Devices ~ Apps ~ Emerging Technologies for Enhancing Teaching & Learning in Higher Education
  • Outcome of this Presentation: Endless possibilities for using mobile devices and apps for Teaching and Learning. To Start Pull Out Your Mobile Device
  • The exploding growth of hand-held devices (almost 370 million tablets will be sold by 2016) is transforming higher education in terms of recruiting, teaching, learning, communication, collaboration, social interaction, engagement, productivity and the delivery of education.
  • Webinar Overview This webinar will grab mobile learning by the handheld device and examine impact and challenges of using smart phones and tablets as teaching, learning, communication, collaboration, and instructional tools.
  • Collectively, mobile devices are the most successful and ubiquitous information and communication technology (ICT) in history.
  • Mobile Workers • 60 percent of mobile workers checked in using their smartphone with a service like Foursquare, Gowalla, Facebook Places, and Shopkick. • 66 percent of mobile workers had checked out (made a purchase or other transaction) using their smartphone). • 87 percent used their smartphone for notifications such as sports scores, Facebook updates, SMS text messages, or other always-on applications. • 57 percent had used their smartphone as an e-ticket or mobile boarding card. • 44 percent used their smartphone to scan barcodes and compare prices.
  • African mobile penetration hits 80% (and is growing faster than anywhere else)
  • The smart phone could provide the answer to educating those in remote areas, as tested by the University of Pretoria. Research carried out by the university indicated that 96% of the distance education students had access to mobile phones, while only 1% had access to the internet at home.
  • mLearning Africa There are barriers to mobile learning in Africa, such as illiteracy levels, access issues (remote areas and price factors) and a gender gap (more men have mobile phones than women). However, thanks to the availability of solar power and mobiles running on much less power than computers, education through mobile phones is becoming a great possibility to help those formerly excluded from educational opportunities. If Smart Phone technology is developed in a robust, low cost manner, more and more Africans will continue to take advantage of this information technology and new and exciting learning styles available to them. Africa which had a mobile penetration rate of just 5% in the 1990s is now the second largest and fastest growing mobile phone market in the world with a penetration rate of over 60%
  • Global Impact United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) Paris, France • In less than a decade mobile technology has spread to the furthest corners of the planet. Of the estimated 7 billion people on Earth, 6 billion now have access to a mobile device.

  • Gartner: Hype Cycle for Emerging Technologies This Hype Cycle examines the status of, and prospects for, various mobile device technologies. It advises device vendors, mobile operators, application providers and others on the maturity of these technologies and their use.
  • mLearning vs. eLearning Mobile learning on Smart Phones differs from e-learning on computers in that activities are not set in one place and can be conducted at any time and at any place.
  • Mobile Learning • Mobile learning is a customized experience based on the device, the features, and the learner. • Example: A traditional computer lab will look the same across the world (same monitor, computer, etc.). Unlike mobile devices, where the user dictates the device, the learning environment and experiences.
  • Definition Mobile devices are digital, easily portable, usually owned and controlled by an individual rather than an institution, can access the internet, have multimedia capabilities, and can facilitate a large number of tasks, particularly those related to communication. UNESCO, 2014 Policies Guidelines for Mobile Learning.
  • Unique Benefits of Mobile Learning UNESCO, 2014 noted that, “Mobile devices also have a track record of reinforcing retention of essential information. A number of applications – building on theories that human forgetfulness follows certain patterns – employ carefully calibrated logarithms to schedule reviews of concepts at optimal times, after information has been learned and just before it is likely to be forgotten, thereby facilitating the movement of information from short-term to long-term memory. Thus, mobile devices allows the learner to access on-demand information any time, any where, any space. However the essential issue is “connectivity”.
  • “Today mobile technologies are often common even in areas where schools, books, and computers are scarce. As price of mobile phone ownership continues to decline, more and more people, including those in extremely impoverished areas, are likely to own and know how to use a mobile device.” UNESO, 2014

  • Nursing & Allied Health
  • • Physicians are widely known as early adopters of smartphones, and that might be partly because they have been a popular subject for researchers conducting surveys about the impact of mobile health in hospitals. A Study last year by Wolters Kluwer Health’s Lippincott Williams Wilkins (LLW) of 3,900 nurses indicated in early 2012, 71 percent of nurses were already using smartphones professionally. • Enspektos found that physicians were more trusting of medical information in their mobile apps than nurses were. That statistic complements another finding from the LLW nurses survey: Of the 71 percent of nurses who already use smartphones, 87 percent also want a printed version of the same content they have in their app.
