    • 2. 2-2 Classifying Matter <ul><li>Classify mixtures as solutions, suspensions, or colloids. </li></ul>
    • 3. Solutions <ul><li>Particles are dissolved. </li></ul><ul><li>Will not settle out if allowed to stand. </li></ul><ul><li>Will not separate when filtered. </li></ul><ul><li>Particles are very small. </li></ul>
    • 4. Suspensions <ul><li>Suspended particles scatter light in all directions. </li></ul><ul><li>Suspensions are cloudy. </li></ul><ul><li>Particles are large in size. </li></ul><ul><li>Particles will settle out or float if allowed to stand. </li></ul><ul><li>Particles can be removed if passed through a filter paper. </li></ul>
    • 5. Colloids <ul><li>Particles are usually too small to </li></ul><ul><li>be seen with the naked eye. </li></ul><ul><li>The particles are medium in size. </li></ul><ul><li>Particles will not settle out of the mixture. </li></ul><ul><li>Particles will pass through filter. </li></ul>
    • 6. Tyndall Effect <ul><li>Light cannot be seen unless it reflects off of a surface. </li></ul><ul><li>Light visible in mixture, large enough particles </li></ul><ul><li>Suspensions and Colloids give a positive Tyndall Effect. Solutions do not. </li></ul>
    • 7. Review <ul><li>Suspension – large particle – settles out </li></ul><ul><li>Colloid – medium particle – no settling </li></ul><ul><li>Solution – small particle – dissolves </li></ul><ul><li>Tyndall effect positive on suspensions and colloids. </li></ul>
