Road Safety Audit http://www.unb.ca/transpo/rsa/RSAGuidelines.pdfA road safety audit has been defined as: “. . . a formal examination of an existing orfuture road or traffic project, or any project thatinteracts with road users, in which an independent,qualified examiner reports on the project’s accidentpotential and safety performance” (AUSTROADS,1994).
  3. 3. • Road safety audits are not a project redesign.• Road safety audits are not intended for high cost projects only.• Road safety audits are not informal checks or inspections.• Road safety audits are not a means to select among alternative projects.• Road safety audits should not be viewed as a check of standards compliance.
  4. 4. Benefits of conducting a road safety audit.• Reduce the risk (including probability and severity)of accidents on new projects and at interfaces with existing roads;• Increase the prominence of road safety in the minds of all involved in the planning, design, construction, and maintenance of the project;• Reduce the whole life cost of the project by reducing the number of post-opening modifications; and• Ensure inclusion of all road users rather than the traditional focus on the automobile.

Road safety audits can provide increased safety intwo ways:•By removing preventable accident-producingelements, such as inappropriate intersection layouts,at the planning and design stages; or•By mitigating the effects of remaining or existingproblems by the inclusion of suitable crash-reducingfeatures, such as anti-skid surfacing, guard fencing,traffic control devices, and delineation.
  6. 6. AUDIT STAGES• Feasibility (planning);• Draft (preliminary/layout) design;• Detailed design;• Pre-opening; and• Post-opening (including existing or in-service facilities).
