Heart for the Lost

  1. 1. [HEART FOR THE LOST]
  2. 2. Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things. What you have learned and received and heard and seen in me — practice these things, and the God of peace will be with you. PHILIPPIANS 4:8-9 {ESV}
  3. 3. So, setting sail from Troas, we made a direct voyage to Sam- othrace, and the following day to Neapolis, and from there to Philippi, which is a leading city of the district of Macedonia and a Roman colony. We remained in this city some days. And on the Sabbath day we went outside the gate to the riverside, where we supposed there was a place of prayer, and we sat down and spoke to the women who had come together.
  4. 4. One who heard us was a woman named Lydia, from the city of Thyatira, a seller of purple goods, who was a worshiper of God. The Lord opened her heart to pay attention to what was said by Paul. And after she was baptized, and her household as well, she urged us, saying, “If you have judged me to be faithful to the Lord, come to my house and stay.” And she prevailed upon us. ACTS 16:11-15 {ESV}
  5. 5. ACTION - Pray for the lost, or pre-Christians in your life. - Look for spiritually interested people. - Just talk (and listen) to people. - And, oh . . . share the Gospel.
  6. 6. As we were going to the place of prayer, we were met by a slave girl who had a spirit of divination and brought her owners much gain by fortune-telling. She followed Paul and us, crying out, “These men are servants of the Most High God, who proclaim to you the way of salvation.”
  7. 7. And this she kept doing for many days. Paul, having become greatly annoyed, turned and said to the spirit, “I command you in the name of Jesus Christ to come out of her.” And it came out that very hour. But when her owners saw that their hope of gain was gone, they seized Paul and Silas and dragged them into the marketplace before the rulers.
  8. 8. And when they had brought them to the magistrates, they said, “These men are Jews, and they are dis- turbing our city. They advocate cus- toms that are not lawful for us as Romans to accept or practice.” The crowd joined in attacking them, and the magistrates tore the gar- ments off them and gave orders to beat them with rods.
  9. 9. And when they had inflicted many blows upon them, they threw them into prison, ordering the jailer to keep them safely. Having received this order, he put them into the inner prison and fastened their feet in the stocks. ACTS 16:16-24 {ESV}
  10. 10. If God is for us, who can be against us? He who did not spare his own Son but gave him up for us all, how will he not also with him graciously give us all things? Who shall bring any charge against God’s elect? It is God who justifies. Who is to condemn? Christ Jesus is the one who died — more than that, who was raised — who is at the right hand of God, who indeed is interceding for us.
  11. 11. Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall tribulation, or dis- tress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or danger, or sword? As it is written, “For your sake we are being killed all the day long; we are regarded as sheep to be slaughtered.” No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us.
  12. 12. For I am sure that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers, nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord. ROMANS 8:31-39 {ESV}
  13. 13. ACTION - Be with the lost. - Count your life forfeit.
  14. 14. Having received this order, he put them into the inner prison and fastened their feet in the stocks. About midnight Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns to God, and the prisoners were listening to them. ROMANS 16:24-25 {ESV}
  15. 15. But how are they to call on him in whom they have not believed? And how are they to believe in him of whom they have never heard? And how are they to hear without some- one preaching? And how are they to preach unless they are sent? As it is written, “How beautiful are the feet of those who preach the good news!” ROMANS 10:14-15 {ESV}
  16. 16. ACTION - Know and tell the story of your walk with Jesus.
  17. 17. And suddenly there was a great earthquake, so that the foundations of the prison were shaken. And immediately all the doors were opened, and everyone’s bonds were unfastened. When the jailer woke and saw that the prison doors were open, he drew his sword and was about to kill himself, supposing that the prisoners had escaped.
  18. 18. But Paul cried with a loud voice, “Do not harm yourself, for we are all here.” And the jailer called for lights and rushed in . . . ACTS 16:26-29 {ESV}
  19. 19. I am speaking the truth in Christ- I am not lying; my conscience bears me witness in the Holy Spirit — that I have great sorrow and unceasing anguish in my heart. For I could wish that I myself were accursed and cut off from Christ for the sake of my brothers, my kinsmen according to the flesh.
  20. 20. They are Israelites, and to them belong the adoption, the glory, the covenants, the giving of the law, the worship, and the promises. To them belong the patriarchs, and from their race, according to the flesh, is the Christ who is God over all, blessed forever. Amen. ROMANS 9:1-5 {ESV}
  21. 21. Brothers, my heart’s desire and prayer to God for them is that they may be saved. ROMANS 10:1 {ESV}
  22. 22. ACTION - Realize the great value of a soul. - “Silent evangelism”
  23. 23. “God is not primarily concerned about our actions. He is primarily concerned about turning us into creatures of a particular kind.” C.S. LEWIS
  24. 24. And the jailer called for lights and rushed in and trembling with fear he fell down before Paul and Silas. Then he brought them out and said, “Sirs, what must I do to be saved?” And they said, “Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved, you and your household.”
  25. 25. And they spoke the word of the Lord to him and to all who were in his house. And he took them the same hour of the night and washed their wounds; and he was baptized at once, he and all his family. Then he brought them up into his house and set food before them. And he rejoiced along with his entire household that he had believed in God. ACTS 16:29-34 {ESV}
  26. 26. But when it was day, the mag- istrates sent the police, saying, “Let those men go.” And the jailer reported these words to Paul, saying, “The magistrates have sent to let you go. Therefore come out now and go in peace.”
  27. 27. But Paul said to them, “They have beaten us publicly, uncondemned, men who are Roman citizens, and have thrown us into prison; and do they now throw us out secretly? No! Let them come themselves and take us out.” The police reported these words to the magistrates, and they were afraid when they heard that they were Roman citizens.
  28. 28. So they came and apologized to them. And they took them out and asked them to leave the city. So they went out of the prison and visited Lydia. And when they had seen the brothers, they encouraged them and departed. ACTS 16:35-40 {ESV}
  29. 29. Brothers, join in imitating me, and keep your eyes on those who walk according to the example you have in us. PHILIPPIANS 3:17 {ESV}
  30. 30. Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things. What you have learned and received and heard and seen in me — practice these things, and the God of peace will be with you. PHILIPPIANS 4:8-9 {ESV}
  31. 31. ACTION - Team up with others and imitate their hearts for the lost.
