  4. 4. Putting it all together… <ul><li>Healing starts by providing a clean environment. Given the time, Nature will slowly restore the individual’s health… </li></ul>Such was the believe of Florence Nightingale
  5. 5. Florence Nightingale and the beginning of Nursing

Brief History: <ul><li>Born May 12, 1820 in Florence, Italy. </li></ul><ul><li>Daughter of William Edward Nightingale and Frances Smith. </li></ul><ul><li>Nightingale knew that her calling was to become a nurse from a very young age. </li></ul><ul><li>She made an impact caring for wounded soldiers in Turkey during the Crimean War (1854-1856). </li></ul><ul><li>Nightingale believed positive environmental factors assisted in the healing process. </li></ul><ul><li>Nursing knowledge facilitates nature to do the healing for the patient. </li></ul>

An Environment of life ..or death <ul><li>Nightingale believed strongly that favorable environmental factors play a crucial role in the health and well being of individuals. </li></ul><ul><li>Clean Air </li></ul><ul><li>Natural Lighting </li></ul><ul><li>Pure water/ Clean water </li></ul><ul><li>Efficient drainage </li></ul><ul><li>Environmental Cleanliness </li></ul><ul><li>Proper nutrition </li></ul>
  8. 8. Goal of Nursing as per Nightingale <ul><li>“ Assisting the patient in retaining of ‘Vital powers’, by meeting in needs, thus, putting the patient in the best possible condition for nature to act upon” (Parker, Smith 48) </li></ul>
