Building the Future
in Portugal
Volunteer Abroad
Make a difference this summer and contribute to give
a home to an underprivileged family in Portugal.
A program developed by
Program “Building the future in Portugal”
Who are we?
Just a Change
Just a Change is a non-profit organization that has the main goal of fighting the poverty housing.
Mobilizing all the necessary resources to a construction work, Just a Change tries to give back the
housing dignity to the needed families. With a large focus in the construction of relationships with the
families that supports, Just a Change intends to create “Just a Change” in their lives, with the hope that
these changes become a turning point into a hopeful and joyful live. At the same time, Just a Change
mobilizes the university students as volunteers in order to include them as part of the solution to
Poverty Housing, believing that these students will adopt a committed and charitable position in the
society for the rest of their lives.
Vision: A world in which everyone had a decent home.
Main objectives: Remodeling 130 homes and 60 social organizations in the next 5 years
Achievements:
- Over 800 volunteers have worked with us
- 28 families have a new home now thanks to these volunteers
- Remodeling of 7 social organizations’ infrastructures
ImpacTrip
impacTrip is a travel promoter that fights social inequality through volunteer tourism in Portugal.
Our mission is to promote different trips that make a difference.
This is a small social enterprise aiming at changing the way people travel. With the increasing number of
people looking for alternative travel experiences to explore Europe, impacTrip want to be a fresh and
positive option for these sustainable travellers. We really want to offer the most unique travel
experiences in Portugal.
Vision: A world in which travelers can make a real difference.
The project: Building the Future in Portugal
Project presentation
Portugal is a great place to live. Nice weather, inspiring history, healthy tasty food and awesome people.
Unfortunately, not everyone in Portugal has access to the great quality of life the country can offer.
Over 2 million people is in danger to live in poverty, including 500 thousand children and their families.
This project directly helps families living in poverty to have a decent home by mobilizing national and
international volunteers to build and repair their houses.
As a Just a Change volunteer, you will have the opportunity to be integrated into a team of volunteers
from all over the world that have a common mission: contribute to allow everyone to have a home.
Painting a door, repairing a room floor or fixing the bathroom wall will be part of your daily tasks
alongside with your peers. The results of your work are tangible and truly meaningful from day one but
the smiles on the families’ face when moving in are priceless.
Highlights
1. Explore the incredible Portuguese culture by working side by side with locals
2. Travel like a local, not like a tourist. We will suggest the best places in Lisbon
3. Have an independent experience, which allows you to gain leadership, career and educational
experiences
4. Make a REAL and meaningful positive impact on the communities you work in
5. Meet people from different cultures and work as a team
Take a look at some of our last volunteers…
Testimonies: What volunteers say about us
“For me, Just a Change (JAC) was very important for my personal
development. I first joined JAC for a flash mob to fund raising and then
joined a team to help building a home for a family and it. I recommend
everyone reading this to participate in their volunteer programs because not
only it makes a difference in the lives of the people we help, but also on our
own. IT'S JUST GREAT!! :) “
“We were 4 boys and 1 girl and, with our sleeves up, we started
working right away. Covered with ink and sweat, we revolutionized
the pace of the construction world! In the end we had 4 walls fixed,
we were covered in dirt and super tired but it was a day full of
laughs, happiness and great memories. Big thanks to JAC!”
“Sometimes people want to volunteer but don’t know how. Here is
my advice: Just a Change! For me it is a volunteer work full of joy. It
is not just fun… In the end, we do change people’s lives!”
Why Portugal
Situated in the extreme south-west of Europe, just a few hours from any of the other European capitals,
Portugal is still a country to discover for most Europeans.
Portugal has a unique cultural heritage, where tradition and modernity blend together in perfect
harmony making it a country with its own personality. More than the great white sandy paradise-like
beaches, superb cuisine or fine wines, it is the hospitality of the Portuguese people, who make it the
perfect destination for active holidays. Combine meaningful volunteer work, relaxing time, meeting
people, enjoying the weather and having an awesome time.
Portugal invites you to come and stay for a while.
Sun and beaches
With over 260 days of sun a year, Portugal is definitely a great holiday destination. The beaches
alongside the 1,100 kms coastline invite us to relax and spend some days there. Each beach is different
and there are a lot of activities to do.
Gastronomy and wine
The Portuguese gastronomy is known worldwide as being simple as tasteful. From the pastries to the
grilled fish topping of with delicious desert. Portuguese wines are also recognised internationally for its
excellence. Now it’s your turn to be the jury and taste it.
Guilty pleasures
When the night comes, the historical centre turns into a meeting point for everyone who likes to party.
Coffee houses, bars, clubs and concerts in open air are very alive all year around and you can find a lot
of suggestions to spend an entertaining night.
Culture and history
The rich history of the country materializes in all its castles, monuments and museums from North to
South. Every city surprises you.
Warning: You might never want to leave!
About Lisbon
Lisbon is a city with an incredible diversity. From
an old European port, it became well-known for
its authenticity as well as for the beautiful sunny
urban and beach landscapes. With a fantastic
harmony between old and new, the Portuguese
Capital is able to offer a great quality of life for
its inhabitants and an awesome experience for
those who visit it.
It’s sunny days allows you to live on the streets
throughout much of the year, either on the
waterfront, by the Tagus river, or on the hilltop
terraces during the day, or on the streets of
Bairro Alto at night. The international press
increasingly raves about Lisbon, whether for the
famous local cuisine, or for the contrast of the
old architecture of the historic neighborhoods
with the contemporary in Parque das Nações.
For those visiting Lisbon, the attraction is more the city’s life and atmosphere than simply seeing
monuments and museums. The spirit of such a young and alive and, at the same time, so interesting and
historically rich city, put Lisbon on the map of more and more people each year.
We will give you the best local tips to go around the city!
