Euclid of Alexandria<br />Despite being arguably the leading mathematics teacher of all time little is know of Euclid. <br />Alexandria, Egypt 325 – 265 BC<br />Proclus, “He is therefore younger than Plato&apos;s circle, but older than Eratosthenes and Archimedes.” (Lancon, 1991)<br />Studied at Plato’s Academy in Athens<br />Learning the geometry of Eudoxus and Theaetetus.<br />
    3. 3. Euclid of Alexandria<br />Father of Geometry – The Elements<br />Also wrote works on perspective, conic sections, spherical geometry, number theory, and rigor. (Gittleman, 1975)<br />None of Euclid’s writing contained a preface.<br />Nothing but theorems and proofs <br />

The Elements<br />2nd most successful and influential book of all time, behind the Bible. <br />Compilation and synthesis of Greek mathematical knowledge <br />What he accomplished was presenting geometry in a single logical structure, making it easy to use and reference. <br />Divided into 13 books<br />1-6 Plane Geometry<br />7-9 Number Theory<br />10 Theory of Irrational Numbers<br />11-13 3-D Geometry<br />

Structure of Elements<br />It comprises a collection of definitions, postulates/axioms, theorems, and proofs.<br />Contains no calculation<br />All of the books of the Elements rely on the axioms of Book I <br />Axiom- the truth of which is taken for granted as being blatantly obvious (self-evident).<br />

Euclid&apos;s Axioms<br />Things which are equal to the same thing are also equal to one another.<br />If equals be added to equals, the wholes are equal.<br />If equals be subtracted from equals, the remainders are equal.<br />Things which coincide with one another are equal to one another.<br />The whole is greater than the part.<br />(O’Connor, 1999)<br />

Significance –Elements<br />His work in geometry provided the foundation on which all future mathematicians were educated.<br />Written in 300 BC & used in schools until 1903.<br />Credited with geometrization<br />The use of geometrical concepts and techniques in a different field of study.<br />
