1. INDIANS’ WEEKLY!
November 18, 2011 Volume IX
2011 BITTER/SWEET, MOSTLY SWEET!
WARRIORS’ SEASON ENDS IN DISAPPOINTMENT, 29-14
The game was everything we all expected it to be, at least for one half. Perhaps not many other than
the Warriors’ team itself and their devoted followers, believed they would be leading the 2-Time,
Back-to-Back Conference Champion Rosemead Rebels 14-0 at the end of the first half. However,
that indeed was the case as the Warriors took the second possession of the game and scored on a 26
yard touchdown run by Noah Rangel. Throughout the game, RB’s Mike Vital, Richard Castro and
RANGEL Noah Rangel did a great job finding holes made by the offensive line in the Rebels’ defense and
breaking tackles.
The defense was dominant with newcomer Matthew Windhorst leading the way making tackle after
tackle. New additions Adrian Lemus, Mikey Ramirez, Matthew Hernandez and Mike Vital provided
the support on the defense needed to consistently turn away the Rebels’ offense.
After the touchdown run by Rangel, the snap was mishandled and the 2-point conversion attempt
was no good...Warriors lead 6-0. In the second quarter, Richard Castro went 46 yards to the Rose-
CASTRO mead 2-yard line, setting up Rangel’s second touchdown of the day.
It looked as though the Rebels would get back into the game on a 17 yard touchdown run, but hold-
ing was called and the touchdown nullified. The Rebels then attempted a pass that was tipped by
Mike Vital and intercepted by Ramon Preciado returning it to the Warriors’ 10 yard line. The Rebels
defense would hold and the Warriors had to punt from deep in their own territory. The punt put
Rosemead in great field position, but once again the Warriors’ defense held, denying a score at the
VITAL 7-yard line….halftime, Warriors lead 14-0.
On the 1st possession of the 3rd quarter, a Rosemead Running Back got loose for a 60-yard touch-
down that seemed to ignite the team and their crowd, making the score 14-8 after the 2-point con-
version. The rest of the 3rd quarter was a defensive battle with neither team being able to move the
ball with any consistency.
At the start of the 4th, the Warriors had gone 3 & out and were set to punt. The snap was high af-
RAMIREZ
fecting the timing of the play and subsequently the punt was blocked, giving Rosemead the ball on
our 3-yard line. The Rebels took advantage quickly and scored from 3-yards out. They then lined up
for a 2-point conversion which turned out to be a fake and they successfully converted for 1 point,
making the score now Rosemead 15, Warriors 14.
After exchanging possessions, with QB Airrick Nava out of the game due to an injury, the Indians
came to the line of scrimmage and fumbled the snap with Rosemead recovering deep on the Warri-
ors side of the field once again. Much as they tried, the Rebels could not penetrate the middle of the
WINDHORST Warriors’ defense and so they bounced to the outside where they found success and scored on a 3-
yard run. The 2-point conversion was good making the score 23-14 and taking much of the wind
out of the Warriors’ sail.
After the ensuing kick-off, QB Airrick Nava dropped back to pass, got pressure and threw an inter-
ception that was returned for another quick Rebels’ score, the extra point attempt was no good and
Rosemead now led 29-14, which turned out to be the final score of the game.

NAVA
2. As you can imagine, the loss was devastating to the team, staff, parents and supporters alike, but the
truth of the matter is, it was a tale of two halves. As much as the Warriors dominated the Rebels in
the 1st half, Rosemead was equally FORTUNATE in the 2nd half. Don’t get me wrong, the Rose-
mead Rebels are obviously a good team, you don’t win a Conference Championship without being
so, let alone two, but as they say; “sometimes it’s better to be lucky than good,” and the LUCK was
certainly on their side in the 2nd half.
The future is bright for the Warriors, as the new additions return next season, with a greater under-
standing of a system that was new to them and the veterans now in sync with their new found
“brothers.”
The Warriors’ season may have ended in disappointment, but what a great season it was! The Warri- HEAD COACH
ors will travel to Las Vegas next week to represent the Montebello Indians as they participate in the STEVE RIVAS
Pigskin National Football Tournament...INDIANS FOR LIFE!
SCOUTS DOMINATE PASADENA IN EVERY WAY,
WITH ONE EXCEPTION, THE SCOREBOARD!
In 1997, I saw the beginnings of what I believed to be the strongest Gremlin Division teams, that
team went on to win three of the next four Conference Championships. Whether or not this Scouts’
team will come close to accomplishing that feat remains to be seen, but I firmly believe this team is
equally capable of doing just that.
The semi-final game pitted two undefeated (8-0) teams against each other, the Panthers with the
highest rated defense allowing the least amount of points in the conference and the Scouts with the
highest rated offense scoring the most points in the conference. The saying goes; “defense wins
championships,” but there’s a caveat and that’s field position.
The Scouts’ outplayed the Panthers in every facet of the game, allowing only a couple of first downs
in the entire game as the offense controlled the game on the ground moving the ball consistently, but
CORTEZ just not being able to punch it in.
The Line-backing trio of Alex Cortez, Steven Loera and Isaac Cruz kept the Pasadena offense at bay
for the entire game and so the game ended in a 0-0 tie.
The Overtime tiebreaker placed the ball at the 10 yard line and the Panthers got the first shot and
although they had been ineffective the entire game, scored on a 10 yard touchdown pass and led 6-0.
LOERA
The Scouts would get their opportunity to tie or win on their possession at the 10 yard line, but were
stopped on fourth down at the 1 yard line, giving the Panthers the win and a “Trip to the ‘Ship.”
Head Coach Armando Valencia writes; “It was a tremendous atmosphere, the stands were crowded,
loud and electrified and the game didn’t disappoint. Our kids left everything out on the field! Our
defense was stout and I’m very proud of our team and staff, especially Defensive Coordinator Matt
Escalera, who had our defense hitting and hustling for the home stretch of the season. I’m also very
proud and appreciative of our parents for their undying support.”
CRUZ “We finished the season at 8-1 which included an undefeated run through the Citrus League. I told
our team it’s not the end of the world because we have three more seasons to get the job done and
we can only get better. The 2012 Braves (JPW’s) will be a team to look out for. This group of young
men (and woman) will get bigger, stronger and faster.”
I firmly believe those in attendance witnessed the Gremlin Division Championship Game that day as
the two best teams played each other in one the best games in conference history. Many times the
GARCIA
scoreboard does not tell the story of the game accurately and on this day, in certainly did not.
Did the best team win? I think not, I believe the opportunistic team won, but that’s my own very bi-
ased opinion. We’ll see, but if Pasadena wins in convincing fashion, we’ll all know who really be-
longed in the Championship Game, including those playing in it. The Scouts will also travel to Las

Vegas to represent the Montebello Indians in the Pigskin National Football Tournament next week.
