    • Promoting sPace science education and astronomy in nePalIntroductionExploring space has improved the living standard of people. Precise weather forecast that helps inminimizing casualties and reduction in property loss because of natural calamity, telemedicine-thetechnology through which people of remote areas are accessible to good health care,telecommunication that has helped people of different parts of the world to communicate are fewinferences out of many that are directly benefitting the citizens of the world through space science andtechnology. Searching for suitable world to prevent human species from extinction, searching theuniverse to unravel the existence of extraterrestrial creatures, asteroid mining, and in understanding thethreats to our existence closely are all possible only through the development of space science andtechnology. Knowing about all these benefits, developed countries are carrying out their variousprojects in space exploration jointly over the two past decades, which otherwise used to be thecompetition for space race.Nepal is a land locked country which consists of uneven geographical regions. The main income sourceof Nepal is agriculture .Seasonal flooding and landslides are observed problems for the Nepalese. Peopleof hilly region are unable to get access to good health care and good doctors. Large numbers of peopleare dying because of minor diseases. In such a situation, application of space technology is veryessential. Regular monitoring of land through remote sensing, precise weather forecast andtelemedicine is most for raising up the living standard of the Nepalese.The status of space science education and astronomy in Nepal is very low. We don’t find the convincinguse of space technology. No space agency is in existence till date. Only few Institutions in Nepal areproviding the formal space science education. This clearly reflects the nation has neglected veryimportant field space science and technology. Knowing this, St. Xavier’s Astro group has initiated aproject to promote space science and technology in the nation, and to engage young students, generalpublic and teachers in the development of the field through their participation in different informalnational and international projects carried out in collaboration with national nongovernmentalorganization Nepal Astronomical Society(NASO) and international organizations Space GenerationAdvisory Council (SGAC),International Astronautical Federation(IAF), Global Hands OnUniverse(GHOU) and Astronomy without Borders(AWB). 1
    • Objectives • To make visitors know the role of space science technology and astronomy in the overall development of the nation. • To help interested visitors in the field to know more on international and national space related organizations (through poster session, presentations and documentary) those are directly or indirectly helping local bodies for the promotion of space science and technology. • To help visitors in gaining informal space science education by sharing space education related materials (related websites and booklets) • To teach visitors basics of astronomy though observation and through astronomical softwares.Significance and applicationsProject is divided into five categories-Presentation, Interaction, Poster session, Observation andDocumentary show. There will be three parallel sessions as listed below: • Talk program/ documentary show, • Poster session/interaction • Observation.The project will be a complete educational outreach activity which will make students aware on theimportance on space science and astronomy, motivate them in taking informal space science educationand help them to build their network with useful existing international and national organizations.BudgetThe project is self funded.MethodologyA short presentation of maximum 3 minutes will be presented on status of basic space education inNepal, and suggest visitors how they can help individually and in a group in rising up this present statuswith the support of various (above mentioned) national and international space related organizations.The observation will be followed by solar observation programme. Sun spot captured live will beprojected on the screen, and angular momentum, diameter and velocity of sun will be calculated. (If 2
    • observing conditions become favorable then the different physical parameters of sun will be calculated).Rotational motion of sun and Heliocentric model will be discussed. Visitors are taught to useAstronomical softwares World Wide Telescope, Cyber sky, Stellarium and Redshift7. This will befollowed by capturing video of the visitors who are interested in sending their message toextraterrestrial creatures (aliens), the project of MY Universe Album with the banner of My Universeand Blue Marble, and documentary on Space Generation Advisory Council and the observation of PartialSolar Eclipse as observed from the venue of Nepal Academy of Science and Technology (NAST) as thebackground.Output • Visitors get to know on the present status on space science and astronomy in Nepal and academic institutions, governmental and nongovernmental organizations working in the related field. • Visitors realize the importance of space science technology for the development of the nation and ways how they can contribute in developing the field through formal and informal education by working individually or in group in collaboration with national and international organizations. • Visitors are taught to use astronomical softwares for observing daily night sky and locating planets and their satellites and observing different phases of our own moon. • The collected messages for the extra terrestrial will be launched in the outer space in a rocket through My Universe Album project. • Visitors can see how sun rotates in front of their eyes, calculate angular momentum and diameter of the sun and observe sunspot through 8 inch Dobsonian Telescope. • Through posters and presentations, visitors not only explore the mystery of the universe, but as well they can expand their network for enhancing their knowledge and skills on knowing more on national and international organizations. • Visitors will gain a detail information about our life giving star; the sun; such as structure, composition, life, birth and death of the sun. Many posters giving the physical data related to sun will be shown.ConclusionThe project is a complete package of an educational outreach in Space Science Education andAstronomy. It makes visitors aware how space science technology helps in raising up the living standardsof the Nepalese society, motivate them in taking formal and informal space science education through 3
    • various national and international space science related projects and help them to build their networkwith useful existing international and national organizations which is vital for promotion of SpaceScience Education and Astronomy in Nepal. 4
