    4. If You Can Watch It You Can Put It On Your Harddrive! That's the purpose of this guide: to help you get any video on your harddrive. Membership sites: ------------------------ I had this problem when I was a member of several paid membership sites. They have a video tutorial section where you can 'watch' videos to learn techniques, or to do research, or to learn to use a software application... That's a good thing, because after all a picture often says more than a thousand words. Some learn better from ebooks, others learn quicker by watching a video tutorial. And to be quite honest I prefer videos myself too. However, it often happens that webmasters or owners of a membership site avoid making the videos downloadable. Why? My guess is that this way they hope that members stay longer and pay for an extra month to watch the videos over and over until they 'get it'. Especially if the membership offers a lot of videos and services. But in my opinion that is not really honest. After all you pay for the membership and thus you should be able to download the videos and watch them whenever you want. You will save time and probably save money for the reason mentioned above and of course you will spend less bandwidth. Broadband versus Dial-up ------------------------------- When I started using an Internet Browser 2 years ago I had a dial up connection, just because broadband was not yet available everywhere in my country. (By the way I live in Belgium) I knew 'Broadband' was coming and that it gave you a lightening fast internet connection, but for those that had access to this 'technological miracle' the price tag was high. And, yes I still remember how long it took to download a file of a few Megabytes, it took literally hours...and money, because I paid for every minute I was online. Anyway, for those that still depend upon a dial-up internet connection (and I know they still exist); this guide will be a life saver. You will not have to download a video file several times to watch it. Download it once, and save it to your harddisk will be possible if you follow the simple steps I show you in this guide. 4 Copyright 2008 - 2009 © Electronsoft.com
    5. What do you need? You will need an Internet browser : Internet Explorer or Firefox. If you purchased Windows I assume you already have Internet Explorer installed. Some people prefer Firefox other people like Internet Explorer. For the Mac users there is a Internet Explorer version available at the Microsoft Download Center Firefox can be downloaded from the following location: http://www.mozilla.com/firefox/ And that's it! No special software needed. Follow the simple steps and you're ready to Rock 'n Roll! I will explain everything so that following the steps will seem a breeze for you. 5 Copyright 2008 - 2009 © Electronsoft.com
    6. Using Internet Explorer Start Your Browser ... Internet Explorer First of all I will show you what settings to change in the 'Temporary Internet Files' of your Internet Explorer: You can access the 'Temporary Internet Files' by clicking on the Tools → Internet Options A new window will popup where you will see Temporary Internet Files When you see the 'Temporary Internet Files' in IE5 and IE6 you can choose to 'delete cookies', ' delete files' and 'settings'. In IE7 you have 2 buttons 'delete' and 'settings'. Choose Settings → there you can choose to change the amount of disk space you want to use. By default the amount is set to 1024MB, but this will probably slow down your Internet Explorer. The more files get into the 'Temporary Internet Files' folder the slower it will get. So, you can change that provided that you don't set it too low. We need disk space for our videos. If you want your Internet browser to be faster it is better not to set the amount of disk space too high. 250 Mbyte is sufficient. (This is how much our 'Temporary Internet Files' folder will be able to store.) Depending on which IE you have there's also an option to set the number of days before clearing the browse history. Set it to 1 day. Your Internet Explorer will remember the pages you visited for that day, but more important the 'Temporary Internet Files' will be deleted after 1 day. The benefit is that your IE will be faster and new disk space will come available. To start it is a good idea to delete the files from the Temprary Internet Files folder. And as you probably understand we will have free disk space for new videos to watch and download. Or watch this video Click here for dial up users (845KB) (On the same page you can download the video in zip-format) OK. Now we're ready to watch the videos and actually put them on our hard drive in the folder of our choice. 6 Copyright 2008 - 2009 © Electronsoft.com
    7. Let's Watch Some Videos... Of course we will use Internet Explorer to do this. It doesn't matter if you go to a protected area, such as a membership site or a site like Youtube. All the videos that you are able to watch, you will be able to put in another folder. The folder of your choice to watch them as many times as you want and whenever you want to do that. You've watched 1 or more videos. So, let's go ahead : Go to the 'Temporary Internet Files' : Tools → Internet options → A window pops up → Settings → View files this will show you the content of your 'Temporary Internet Files' folder. It's All There... Everything you are able to see in Internet Explorer: images, videos you watch, audios you listen to, are stored on your computer. And guess where...in your 'Temporary Internet Files' folder. Your browser program needs those files to show them on your screen. It is nothing more than logic... 7 Copyright 2008 - 2009 © Electronsoft.com
    8. Put the files in the right folder After watching a video you will go and find it in the 'Temporary Internet Files' folder. Important: It happens that you don't find the files in the folder. Just restart your Internet Explorer, then perform the actions as described above and they will appear. Even if you visit only 1 website a lot of files can be found in the 'Temporary Internet Files' folder. There are images, videos, audios, css documents, scripts... So, we will have to sort the files. First maximize the window of that folder, it's easier to work that way. And because we know that video-files are very large, we will sort all the files by size. We do that by clicking on the size button in the folder. Make sure that you click once more if the files are sorted in 'ascending' mode. We want the big files to be on top. That will sort the files by size and now you are able to see the video files on top. Sort ‘size’ of files ascending... 8 Copyright 2008 - 2009 © Electronsoft.com
    9. There are different video file types: File Format Description Adobe Flash is a cross-platform video file format that plays on any Adobe Flash computer with the Adobe Flash Player. Flash is ideal for publishing (SWF/FLV) videos on the Web. Use SWF for short, low motion videos such as screen video or basic PowerPoint presentations. Do not select the SWF file format if your Timeline includes camera video (PIP). See Also: SWF (Flash) • Adobe Flash (SWF/FLV) • SWF Recommended Settings • About Flash Player Compatibility Use FLV for longer, high motion videos such as real-world video, camera video, or animation. Use FLV for lossy or compressed video clips such as WMV or MPG clips. See Also: FLV (Flash) • Adobe Flash (SWF/FLV) • SWF Recommended Settings • About Flash Player Compatibility Windows Media WMV produces a video that plays in Windows Media Player. See Video (WMV) Windows Media (WMV-Streaming Format). QuickTime MOV produces a video that plays on both Mac and PC operating (MOV) systems with Apple QuickTime Player. See QuickTime (MOV). Use AVI for CD-ROM and DVD distribution. AVI retains the Audio Video highest quality and you can edit AVI files in other video editing Interleave (AVI) programs. See Audio Video Interleave (AVI). iPod/iTunes M4V produces a video for playback on an iPod or in iTunes. See (M4V) iPod/iTunes. MP3 produces an audio file from the audio on the Timeline. See MP3 Audio MP3 Audio Only. RM produces a video for playback in RealPlayer. See RealMedia RealMedia (RM) Streaming Media (RM). Camtasia for CAMV uses Camtasia for RealPlayer Plug-In to stream the video RealPlayer with perfect lossless quality. See Camtasia for RealPlayer (CAMV) (CAMV). Use GIF for producing short animations that playback in any Animated GIF browser on any computer platform or to add short animations to a PowerPoint presentation. See Animated GIF File (GIF). 9 Copyright 2008 - 2009 © Electronsoft.com
    10. The SWF files will often be displayed as Shockwave Flash Object, but you have to keep in mind that only the large files are the ones we are looking for. The small SWF files are used to display the video in your browser. You will also often recognize the file you need by looking at the URL after you visited several different websites. If you watched a video on thiswebsite.com, you will find the video by searching for a URL with thiswebsite.com in it. This is not always the case, but most of the times it is. Youtube is different... Youtube is a bit special. If you watched a video on Youtube you will see a large file with the prefix: get_video? And this is the file you need. The Youtube get_video? file Watch the ‘video download method’ video Click here for dial up users (3.3MB) (On the same page you can download the video in zip-format) 10 Copyright 2008 - 2009 © Electronsoft.com
    11. You watched in Internet Explorer: Put the video in the destination folder Be sure to create a folder where you want the file to be stored. To put the video file in the folder of your choice you 1. Right click on the icon of the file 2. Choose ‘save as’ (A new window pops up and then choose the folder you created to put the file in.) 3. Rename the file and click ‘save’ How to determine the file name of a Camtasia video In case you watch a Camtasia video and you use an addon to download media files. The actual file name can be found by clicking on the Camtasia logo you’ll find at the bottom of the Camtasia screen. If you watch the video and you are able to see the Camtasia logo--> click on the logo A window pops up. There is a button File Info → click on that button and it will tell you the filename. So, now we found the file name we need. And we can use this information to find the right video file in our Temporary Internet Files folder. 11 Copyright 2008 - 2009 © Electronsoft.com
    12. Using Firefox Firefox is different , but there are also ways to find the Temporary Internet Files: Method 1 1. Go to ‘Tools’ 2. Click ‘View page info’ 3. Click ‘Media’ 12 Copyright 2008 - 2009 © Electronsoft.com
    13. In the window you will see all the media files of the websites you last visited. It is very important to know that if you visit other websites, the files will be replaced by others. So, the amount of space that this feature has, is limited. I will show you how you can download a Camtasia video with the help of Firefox: 1. Watch a Camtasia video in Firefox (or at least let it load 100%) 2. Go to ‘Tools’ 3. Click ‘Page Info’ 4. Click the ‘Media’ tab After that you will see the media files, such as images and video files. Now you will usually look for .swf and .flv file extensions. You have to know a few things about .swf and .flv file extensions .swf files can act as a container for .flv video files. So most of the time when you watch a Camtasia, you will see a player in your browser. That’s the .swf part of the Camtasia. But , you will also often download .swf flash videos, which you can only start playing from the first byte. .flv are Flash video files, and are basically a stream of images and sound. This means you can stream these from a stream server, and get benefits like the ability to start streaming from anywhere in the file. .swf files are not streaming media, but complete files. This means they will transfer over the Internet protocol from the first byte and if you need something in the last end of the file you will have to wait for the whole file to transfer. But you will find them as Flash Video in the Media feature of your Firefox Internet browser. 5. Now highlight the .swf file 13 Copyright 2008 - 2009 © Electronsoft.com
    14. 6. Click the ‘Save as’ button 7. Save it in your folder. Now the video file is on your computer and you can play it with a Flash Video player. Watch this video For Dial_up users watch this version (There’s also a zip file to download the dial up version) 14 Copyright 2008 - 2009 © Electronsoft.com
    15. Method 2 If you surf the Internet using Firefox and you visit websites, all the files, such as images and videos, that are displayed in the browser window are temporary stored in the cache folders. There are 3 cache folders in Firefox: 1. Memory cache In this cache you will find mostly images and logos of the websites you visit. The memory is no more than 15 MB. 2. Disk Cache This is probably the most used cache of Firefox. There you will find almost all the temporary files, including the video files. The memory is limited to 50 MB by default, but can be increased to 500 MB (if you know how) So, all the temporary files of the websites you visit for up to 50 MB are put into this folder and I Will explain to you how to find and download them a bit further in this report. 3. Offline cache In Firefox and also in Internet Explorer it is possible to display the websites you have visited without being connected to the Internet. That is possible because all the images and website source codes are being remembered in this cache. It is the Internet history of Firefox. Depending on the settings in Options, your Firefox Internet History will be stored in this cache for the number of days set and up to a maximum of 500 MB in size. Of course, the more data stored in the cache, the slower you Firefox browser will get. So, it is a good idea to empty the cache on a regular basis. How to display the cache in Firefox It is actually funny to see how people try to explain where to find the temporary files of Firefox. I’ve been there searching for those d*mn Temporary Internet Files. Out of many explanations I discovered that it is not that difficult. All you have to do is type in the address bar of your Firefox Internet browser the following: about:cache (don’t use spaces) 15 Copyright 2008 - 2009 © Electronsoft.com
    16. A page will be displayed showing all 3 caches of Firefox. 1. Memory cache 2. Disk cache 3. Offline cache You can view the files within them by clicking the link ‘List Cache Entries’ Then all the files that are within a specific cache will be displayed. However, you are not able to download them, (yet). It is possible to click the link to a specific file, an image or a video or a logo... But, what you will see next is a bunch of code and not the actual file. 16 Copyright 2008 - 2009 © Electronsoft.com
    17. The trick is actually simple... When you watch the page with the 3 caches, you will also see a path displayed within each individual cache. And this will be different for XP users compared to Vista users. It doesn’t really matter. It shows you where to find the cache folders. 1.You only need to copy this ‘path’ to go to the specific folder. 2. Next go to your computer’s explorer or ‘My computer’ and paste it in the address bar. What you will see next is the content of that specific cache. And those are the real files. There is one thing mysterious about those files and that is that there is no file extension! Another very typical fact is that each and every one of those files is named with 11 alphanumeric characters. That means that Firefox renames the files to put them in the cache. So, if you want to download a specific file, it will be necessary to know what kind of file you are about to download. Example: you watch a Camtasia video in Firefox. So, the video file will probably be a .swf or .flv file. Well the controller will be .swf and that’s a small file. You don’t really need it. What you need is the file that is Megabytes or more than 1,000 Kilobytes in size. 17 Copyright 2008 - 2009 © Electronsoft.com
    18. Of course you will want to know what the subject of a particular video is. The best you can do is play the video. You’ll see immediately what the video is about. Then do the following: 1. Copy this file to your destination folder 2. Rename it with the right video file extension. Play the different video file types Your destination folder will probably contain different video file types by now. So, to play the videos you will need different players. The popular video file types can be divided in 4 categories: 1. Adobe and Macromedia Flash Most videos will be .flv with VLC media player you will be able to play those files. You can find a link under the Windows Media explanation. However, the .swf files will need another player and that is SWF opener which can be downloaded from: http://www.swfopener.com for free. 2. Windows Media These are the .wmv and .avi files which can also be played with VLC player Which you can download for free at: http://www.videolan.org/vlc/ 3. Quicktime These are the .mov files, which can be played with the Apple’s Quicktime player. Maybe you already have it on your computer, but it can also be downloaded for free at: http://www.apple.com/quicktime/download/ 4. Real Media These are the .rm files and require the Realplayer which can be downloaded at: http://www.real.com then click on the ‘Realplayer’ button to download the ‘Basic’ version. This player is something special and very useful. After installation, if you watch Youtube videos or other shared videos, upon moving the mouse to the top of the video screen the Realplayer software will show a button on the top right of the screen. 18 Copyright 2008 - 2009 © Electronsoft.com
    19. Notice the red arrow in the image below: Using this feature you will be able to download many videos, including the .flv file extensions. 19 Copyright 2008 - 2009 © Electronsoft.com
    20. As an exercise you can now use the methods to download the video tutorials I provide in this e-book! Not only video files... The technique explained in this guide can also be used for any kind of file that ends up in the 'Temporary Internet Files' folder. So, if you listen to a podcast or any audio on the internet, you will be able to download these files and put them in the folder of your choice. Automate the ‘Download Any Video’ method If you’re technically challenged or you don’t want to bother going into your Internet browser’s temporary files and copy the video files to a destination folder. I have good news for you. I developed a software that does all of the download process that I explain in this e-book, with Firefox or Internet Explorer. All you have to do is choose is go to the page of the video, let the video load, choose a destination folder from within the software and click the ‘Download’ button. I called this software: Video Catcher Pro . There are 3 screens in the software: 1. The ‘Video Download’ 2. The ‘Youtube Download’ (you only need the URL and no Internet browser) 3. The ‘Video Converter’ , convert flash video files to all the popular video formats, such as iPod, iPhone, Cellphone, DVD, etc… Just go there and read what the software can do for you: Click here Conclusion Now you know how to download any media file, you can watch videos and listen to audios at your own pace. People with dial up internet connection will be more than happy, because they now only have to download a video once and they can watch it as many times as they want, without having to download huge files over and over again. I hope this guide brings you a lot of satisfaction by saving you time and money. I will answer all your questions at rudy-dhondt@skynet.be Sincerely, Rudy Dhondt 20 Copyright 2008 - 2009 © Electronsoft.com
