• Project prototype for superhero costume using soft circuits for Kate Hartman’s ITP class 6/9/2008.
  • Eye

    1. 1. Eye of the Hurricane
    2. 2. The Eye

The Eye is a person who experienced complete memory loss and now has no long term memory. When she transforms she can see and control both the past and the future.

The Eye’s weakness is rain which brings back her only memory.

Original Sketch
    3. 3.

The wristband and contact pad on the suit allow the Eye to travel backwards and forwards in time. When the two contact points from the wrist and finger touch the pad, the lights activate and time travel begins.

The wristband and contact pad are constructed using fabric, 3V coin battery, conductive thread, and conductive fabric strips (three types). The circle at the wrist area is the positive and the the fingerband is the ground connection. When they touch the respective conductive material on the pad, the leds light up.
    4. 4.

Lasers. These are her laser contacts that freeze her enemies in time. They are activated by her kneeing her enemy in their privates.

Actual construction is soft switch connected to two leds using conductive fabric strips, 3V coin battery, and fabric.

    5. 5. Drawings
    6. 11. CHALLENGES & SUCESSES

Sewing on lycra

Functioning soft circuit not working consistently/properly.

Trouble shooting circuit once stitched on costume

Costume fitting

Costume design ideas differ from original intent

Soft switch triggering

Connecting a circuit using a contact point from two pieces of the costume

Almost cool looking.

Leds lighting up will always be amazing.

Using fabric “patches” rather than sewing circuits directly into costume.

    7. 12. Future Steps

The strongest design element of the costume, the “eye”, did not get completed. I would like to finish that design.

The idea of video and sound triggers would be great elements for future development.
