  • 2. Facts
    • Born on 18 December 1839
    • Deceased 14 June 1907
    • Flemish priest from Aalst
    • Fought for better circumstances in the factories
  • 3. Career as priest
    • Failed becoming Jesuit  he became a priest
    • Because of his protest campaign, the Church prevented his religious/political activities
  • 4. Political career
    • He was a Catholic social democrat. He supported the poor.
    • He came up against the rich who were corrupt and exploited the poor
    • Elected in Parliament in 1894
    • His target was to create better work circumstances for the workers in the factories
  • 5. Inheritance
    • His life was made into a novel by Louis Paul Boon (1971), a film (1992) and a musical (2007)
