    1. 1. About Glory Russ Fochler January 28, 2012
    2. 2. Glory• Its mentioned throughout the Bible• When you read or hear that word - what comes to your mind?
    3. 3. Glory in “the World”• How is the word “glory” used in newspapers, magazines, movies, etc?
    4. 4. Human Glory?• Extraordinary bravery and sacrifice in battle? (for example, the movie “Glory” about Black Civil War soldiers)• Extraordinary athletic achievement? “Hopefuls Battle for NFL Glory: NPR”
    5. 5. What does “Glory” mean?• The Hebrew word for "glory" is ‫“( ,כבוד‬kavod” or “kabod”).• at its root, “kavod” means "weight" or "heaviness." The same word is then used to express importance, honor, and majesty.• When 70 Hebrew scholars translated the Jewish scriptures into Greek, they chose the Greek word “doxa” (δόξα) which means “common belief” or popular opinion” for the Hebrew “kavod” ‫ כבוד‬and the followers of Jesus who wrote the “New Testament” in Greek also used “doxa” for “glory”.

    7. 7. An Observation Of God’s Glory16 Now the glory of the LORD restedon Mount Sinai, and the cloudcovered it six days. And on theseventh day He called to Moses out ofthe midst of the cloud. 17 The sightof the glory of the LORD was like aconsuming fire on the top of themountain in the eyes of the childrenof Israel. Exodus 24:16-17 NKJV
    8. 8. Glory is Important to God• Glory is used 369 times in the NKJV• He is the “King of glory”
    9. 9. From Psalm 24 & Handel’s MessiahLift up your heads, O you gates!7And be lifted up, you everlasting doors! And the King of glory shall come in. Who is this King of glory? The LORD strong and8mighty, the LORD mighty in battle. Lift up your heads, O you gates!9Lift up, you everlasting doors! And the King of glory shall come in. Who is this King of glory? The LORD of hosts,10He is the King of glory.
    11. 11. God’s Glory on the EarthI saw the LORD sitting on a throne, highand lifted up, and the train of His robefilled the temple. Above it stood 2seraphim; each one had six wings: withtwo he covered his face, with two hecovered his feet, and with two he flew.3 And one cried to another and said:“Holy, holy, holy is the LORD of hosts; The whole earth is full of His glory!”Isaiah 6:1-3 NKJV
    12. 12. How does Isaiah respond to this glory-filled experience? 4And the posts of the door were shaken by the voice of him who cried out, and the house was filled with smoke.5 So I said: “Woe is me, for I am undone! Because I am a man of unclean lips, And I dwell in the midst of a people of unclean lips; For my eyes have seen the King, The LORD of hosts.” Isaiah 6:4-5
    13. 13. God’s Intention: An Experiential,Relational Knowledge (Yada) of His Glory 12 “Woe to him who builds a town with bloodshed, who establishes a city by iniquity! 13 Behold, is it not of the Lord of hosts that the peoples labor to feed the fire, and nations weary themselves in vain? 14 For the earth will be filled with the knowledge (yada) of the glory of the LORD, as the waters cover the sea. Hab 2:12-14
    14. 14. Glory vs. Shame The very next verses in Habakkuk read:“Woe to him who gives drink to his neighbor,Pressing him to your bottle,Even to make him drunk,That you may look on his nakedness! You are filled with shame instead of glory. You also—drink! And be exposed as uncircumcised!”Hab 2:15-16a
    15. 15. • God will talk about or even reveal His glory in the midst of covenant people behaving shamefully.• Besides Habakkuk, we have Numbers 14:11-24• Also God comes in astounding glory in Ezekiel to remove His indwelling glory from the Temple. See Ezekiel 1:4-28 & chapters 10 & 11. Even then, in chapter 11 and chapter 36, God promises that He will put a new spirit and a soft heart in His people.
    16. 16. What God is saying to Judah throughthe prophet Habakkuk is:“The ways you are trying to bringglory to yourselves is bringing shameinstead. But I,Yahweh will show thewhole earth true glory - whichcomes from relationally knowing Me.”
    17. 17. Yahweh Will Reveal His Glory to All FleshThe glory of the LORD shall berevealed, and all flesh shall seeit together; For the mouth of the Lord hasspoken.”Isaiah 40:5
    18. 18. The heavens declare the glory of God;And the firmament shows His handiwork. Ps 19.1
    19. 19. The glory of Yahweh already fills allof His creation! What is missinghas been our ability to perceive andrelationally experience His glory. But Yahweh’s plan is that humanitywill “see” Him and His glory in HisSon Jesus:
    20. 20. • “And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we beheld His glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth.” John 1:14• But since that time, the eyes of many have been blinded by the enemy from seeing this glory in the person of Jesus. And this is where you and I come in. We are called and empowered to shine that experiential, relational knowledge of Jesus wherever we go:
    21. 21. • 3But even if our gospel is veiled, it is veiled to those who are perishing, 4 whose minds the god of this age has blinded, who do not believe, lest the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine on them.• 6For it is the God who commanded light to shine out of darkness, who has shone in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ. 2 Cor 4:3-4 & 6 NKJV
    22. 22. Beholding Jesus16Nevertheless when one turns to theLord, the veil is taken away. Now the 17Lord is the Spirit; and where the Spiritof the Lord is, there is liberty. But we 18all, with unveiled face, beholding as ina mirror the glory of the Lord, arebeing transformed into the same imagefrom glory to glory, just as by theSpirit of the Lord. 2 Cor 3:16-18
    23. 23. Arise, Shine!Arise, shine; For your light has come! And the glory of the Lord is risen upon you.2For behold, the darkness shall cover theearth, and deep darkness the people; But the Lord will arise over you, and Hisglory will be seen upon you.3The Gentiles shall come to your light,And kings to the brightness of your rising.Isaiah 60:1-3
    24. 24. God’s PlanFor it was fitting for Him, for whomare all things and by whom are allthings, in bringing many sons toglory, to make the captain of theirsalvation perfect through sufferings.Hebrews 2:9-11
    25. 25. Suffering?• Suffering for the sake of love (love of God, love of others) and for the sake of being whole-hearted - is of immense value in God’s eyes.• Choosing to accept and even embrace our vulnerabilities is a key to true love and intimacy.• Jesus walked this through as a human on the earth - so that we could inherit this grace from Him.
    26. 26. Adoption, Suffering, and Glory15 For you did not receive the spirit ofbondage again to fear, but youreceived the Spirit of adoption bywhom we cry out, “Abba, Father.”16 The Spirit Himself bears witness withour spirit that we are children of God,17 and if children, then heirs—heirs ofGod and joint heirs with Christ, ifindeed we suffer with Him, that wemay also be glorified together.Romans 8:15-17
    27. 27. Revealed In Us“18 For I consider that the sufferings of thispresent time are not worthy to becompared with the glory which shall berevealed in us.” Romans 8:18Our willingness to suffer for love, to livevulnerably - is establishing glory in us.And this is only possible as we continue tobehold Jesus and His eyes of love andacceptance for us.
    28. 28. Glory Provided So We Can Be One20“I do not pray for these alone, but also for thosewho will believe in Me through their word; 21 thatthey all may be one, as You, Father, are in Me,and I in You; that they also may be one in Us, thatthe world may believe that You sent Me. 22 And theglory which You gave Me I have given them, thatthey may be one just as We are one: 23 I in them, and You in Me; that they may be made perfect inone, and that the world may know that You havesent Me, and have loved them as You have lovedMe.
