Working as a guidance counselor for high school students for three consecutive years in a
private school I was tasked to conceptualized and deliver career guidance program for the juniors and
seniors. Part of the career guidance program of the students are career orientations, career talks,
seminars and symposiums. Through this programs I was given opportunity to discussed the topic,
“Choosing the Best Career for Me” held during the SY 2009-2010. Basically, the discussion
encompasses steps on Career Decision and “accreditation” was partly discussed on the talk. I used A-B-
C to explain to the students what to look for a prospective college or university. “A” stands for
Accreditation, “B” stands for Board Exam Performance, and “C” stands for Commission on Higher
Now let's go back to accreditation, as concept is based on self-regulation which focuses on
evaluation and the continuing improvement of educational quality. A process by which institutions or
programs continuously upgrade their educational quality and services through self-evaluation and the
judgment of peers. A status granted to an educational institution or program which meets commonly
accepted standards of quality or excellence. So basically, accreditation certifies a college or a university
to be a provider of reliable higher education.
It is timely that the author discussed the accrediting programs in the article of Manila Bulletin
newspaper. He was able to explain the various accrediting agencies both in public and private
institutions. Thus, it provides the readers the awareness and importance of this agencies that guards and
maintains the quality of higher education in the Philippines. Accreditation brings the best practices and
efforts of colleges and universities to the students.
