  • “opinions” – It is interesting that Jesus would want to know the opinions of the people he has been ministering to. The results of the poll? “John the Baptist”, “Elijah”, “the prophets”: Amazing that people’s lives were completely turned around and yet they didn’t know who it was that did the healing. We have to be careful today that our message is clear and that people understand who they are joining with when they come down the isle.
  • “mind”: At this time when Jesus is making the turn towards Calvary, it was probably reassuring to Him that the disciples were finally starting to “get it” about who He was. “Thou art the Christ” KJV – notice the Mark gives the brief version of this episode.
  • Matthew 16:13-20 captures this incident as does Luke 9:18-21“source”: The light came on for Peter by the way of heaven and not any earthly impetus. If you want to understand and grasp the deep things of God, such knowledge comes by the way of the Holy Spirit and relationship with God. “bedrock”: Jesus is to be considered the head of the church, not Peter. Our Catholic friend consider this confession the origin of the papacy. See Colossians 1:18, Ephesians 5:23
  • “change”: Jesus began to teach them about the suffering that he was going to endure in the days ahead. “plain”: Luke 19:10,10For the Son of Man came to seek and to save what was lost.” ; Matthew 20:28,28just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.” 2 Corinthians 5:19,19that God was reconciling the world to himself in Christ, not counting men’s sins against them. And he has committed to us the message of reconciliation.”
  • “suffer” & “rejected”“killed”“rise”v. 32 let’s us know that Jesus was very clear about what was going to take place. I know that it’s clear to us reading it 2000 years later but why do you suppose the disciples didn’t get it? (their own expectations; their emotions for Jesus didn’t want this kind of ending; etc.)
  • “yourself”: the very opposite of what this world emphasizes“lives”: Ephesians 1 hammers this idea of the believer being “in him” (Jesus Christ). Vv. 4, 7, 11, 13; 2:21, 22; 3:12“condition”: We have to remember that the soul without Christ is going to Hell. Whether it is Adolf Hitler or the sweet little lady who is our neighbor.
  • “ashamed”: why should be ashamed of that which we believe? I believe that many are “undercover” because they have not made a decision that they are going to go all the way with Jesus. We aren’t ashamed of other things in our lives (career, associations, material things, etc.). “lives”, “tongues”: Living the Christian life is one things but we also have to speak it.
