  • The Presbytery of Donegal is known throughout the denomination for its passion for mission!
  • We are always in the top ten mission giving presbyteries out of 173 in the entire denomination! Again in 2009, we were named in the top ten! We vote to give 45% of our mission money to General Assembly in support of the church’s greater mission and we go 7% beyond that and give 52% of our mission money to the work of the greater church.
  • In 2009 we discerned the will of Christ for the presbytery in terms of our own local mission priorities and determined the dollar amounts as shown. The top 4 priorities are Camp Donegal, The Associate Executive Presbyter and the Associate for Healthy Congregations, New Church Development (to include our mission church in Toughkenamon called La Iglesia) and Church Vitalization initiatives to build up the bodies of Christ. We also determined it important to offer some mission travel money through the Action in Mission division and this year you voted to retain a Global Mission Advocate.
  • You also voted to support our 10 year partnership with Mthatha, boost our efforts toward peace, justice and caring for God’s creation. Finally, you voted to give smaller amounts to Christian Formation, Campus Ministry at Millersville University and Stewardship education. You budgeted $279,530 for local mission.
  • But, as we faithfully face forward, we see that we budgeted $279,530, but only pledged so far - $247,640. This is $31,890 short. The other factor is that Camp Donegal budgets for $80,000, but actually costs about $100,000 to operate. So, we need to spend $19,803 toward last years camp fund. This yields a deficit of $51,693. We need your prayerful, mission hearted consideration. Let’s quickly scan our mission priorities through pictures.
  • Camp Donegal is vitally shaping young lives and imprinting Jesus Christ on God’s children, young and old.
  • Your mission dollars support half of the Associate Exec’s call. His work is about communication and moving into mission interpretation. You also support the Associate for Healthy Congregations who walks beside many of you in vital, life-giving ways.
  • You are supporting La Iglesia as a chartered mission church in Toughkenamon. This is a long term new church development that ministers to the Latino community in Southern Chester County.
  • You are also funding our latest New Church Development project in Lancaster city, called Resurrection Chapel. This is a vibrant ministry to the Spanish community in the greater Lancaster area.
  • You also prioritize Church Vitalization as important to fund. The Vitalization Division seeks to come around churches with grants, ideas, and initiatives to build up the body of Christ.
  • Action in Mission primarily supports small travel grants to help send you into the mission field. Last year they helped the Rev Larry and Barb Moir move to Ethiopia as mission co-workers for the PCUSA. This year they contracted for the outstanding services from Mission Jim Caldwell as the Global Mission Advocate.
  • You are maintaining a lasting friendship and partnership with the Presbytery of Mthatha in South Africa. Each year the bonds grow thicker as we travel, meet, worship and pray together.
  • This year you boosted the hopes of the Peace, Justice and Care of Creation Department by blessing them with a budget of $4000. They are seeking to assist you in your efforts in all these areas.
  • Christian Formation is getting re-organized to assist you in your Elder, Deacon, Clerk training and do more in leadership development.
  • Campus Ministry money goes to the ecumenical Christian community at Millersville University called Christians Open Minded. A number of our pastors are involved in this outreach.
  • Last on the list of mission priorities is $1000 for Stewardship Education. We have given some scholarships toward some outstanding workshops and even held our own in this area.
  • Last and by absolutely no means least is the Outstanding and Faithful work of the Presbyterian Women in Donegal. These mission minded women are also in the Top Ten mission giving organizations across the denomination. You see, over and over and over again, your hearts beat for Jesus Christ and for blessing this world in His name.
  • Friends who love and serve the Lord, let’s not let any of these priorities slip or slide. By taking another look or perhaps by sharpening your #2 pencils in mission, we can accomplish what you discerned last year as Christ’s will for local mission. At the moment a number of these missions are frozen until we have a better picture of the finances. Thanks for your hearts that beat for Jesus Christ and for God’s children in this world. Blessings in Abundance.
