2. 2. ENERGY CRISIS

Introduction

Causes

Historical crises

Emerging shortages

Future and alternative energy sources

 3. 3. ENERGY CRISIS

Introduction:

Since the Industrial Revolution, which commenced in the 18 th century, demand for energy has continued to grow.

In meeting the demand for energy, fossil type energy carriers and in particular oil and gas have contributed the largest share, over the years. Fossil type resources are known to have been formed over hundreds of million years ago and are therefore finite in quantity.

An energy crisis is any great bottleneck (or price rise) in the supply of energy resources to an economy.

energy crisis may be referred to as an

oil crisis

petroleum crisis

energy shortage

electricity shortage

electricity crisis.

 4. 4. ENERGY CRISIS

Causes:

over-consumption

aging infrastructure

choke point disruption or bottlenecks at oil refineries and port facilities that restrict fuel supply.

 5. 5. ENERGY CRISIS

This is what is happening around…

 6. 6. ENERGY CRISIS

World’s energy consumption graph showing constant raise

 7. 7. ENERGY CRISIS

Historical crises:

1973 oil crisis

1979 energy crisis

1990 spike in the price of oil

The UK fuel protest of 2000

North American natural gas crisis

Argentine energy crisis of 2004

North Korea has had energy shortages for many years.

 8. 8. ENERGY CRISIS

Zimbabwe has experienced a shortage of energy supplies for many years due to financial mismanagement.

Political riots occurring during the 2007 Burmese anti-government protests were sparked by rising energy prices.

 9. 9. ENERGY CRISIS
 10. 10. ENERGY CRISIS

Emerging shortages

Crises that exist as of 2008 include:

Oil price increases since 2003

2008 Central Asia energy crisis

South African electrical crisis.

China experienced severe energy shortages towards the end of 2005 and again in early 2008.

It has been predicted that in the coming years after 2009 that the United Kingdom will suffer an energy crisis

 11. 11. ENERGY CRISIS

It is to be noted that developed countries like USA consume more energy than developing countries..

 12. 12. ENERGY CRISIS
 13. 13. ENERGY CRISIS

Future and alternative energy sources:

Thus, efforts must be made, and structures put in place, by government and non governmental organizations for the development of necessary policies and legal frame works well as programs that promote the adoption of renewable energy for sustainable development.

 14. 14. ENERGY CRISIS

Such resources include biomass, hydro, solar, wind, geo- thermal, tides and ocean waves.

By the nature of these resources, they are non depletable and their exploitation and utilization have minimum adverse effect on the environment and are therefore sustainable

 15. 15. ENERGY CRISIS

Current energy ratio band..

- Can still improve..

 16. 16. ENERGY CRISIS

BUT,

Even that’s not enough…!?!?!

 17. 17. ENERGY CRISIS

THIS IS WHAT IS NEEDED…

 18. 18. ENERGY CRISIS

Think twice..

ACT WISE..!!

 19. 19. ENERGY CRISIS

Sorry..,

Conserve energy..

Think twice..

ACT WISE..!!
