  • 1. Neuroendoscopy Market - Global Industry Analysis, Size, Share, Growth, Trends and Forecast, 2013 - 2019 Neuroendoscopes are rigid endoscopes applied for minimally invasive diagnostic and therapeutic procedures of the brain and spinal cord. The endoscopy devices market is one of the most impactful device markets today that ushered the minimally invasive procedures into the world. This segment encompasses the global market of neuroendoscopes used over the world for procedures such as ventriculostomies, biopsies, removal of cysts, tumors and other obstructions. According to American Brain Tumor Association and National Cancer Institute, the number of cases for CNS tumors in United States is around 6.36 per 100,000 people. Metastatic brain tumors are more common in occurrence than malignant brain tumors. Colloid cysts are located in a delicate area of the brain and can be life-threatening as they grow. Other less-common primary brain tumors include pituitary tumors, Schwannomas, CNS lymphomas, oligodendrogliomas, ependymomas, low-grade astrocytomas and medulloblastomas. Neuroendoscopy can be effectively used to diagnose, identify the location of the tumor and surgically treat it as well. There are several access areas to perform neuroendoscopy surgery, such as transnasal/transsphenoidal, transventriculostomy and transseptal based on target location. The device comprises of a thin rigid smooth metal cylinder comprising of an optical element for viewing the insides, a hollow pipe to insert the surgical tool such as pincers, cutters and clamps. The device also comprises of a control unit to rotate and angle the optical element as required. Different endoscopes provide various angles of viewing, and the greater the angle of viewing the easier it is to accommodate the surroundings. One of the major factors restraining the market growth is substitute treatments such as radiation therapy, gamma knife surgeries, and chemotherapy. Diagnostic neuroendoscopy, substitute procedures include MRI, X-ray and CT scans. The market for neuroendoscopy is increasing world-wide due to a rising incidence of brain tumors amongst young adults and even children. This recent trend has compelled medical experts to gain knowledge and training for neuroendoscopy. Many neurosurgeons from developing countries have begun travelling abroad to gather expertise to operate neuroendoscopes. Globally, the market is currently concentrated in United States and developed countries of Europe. The technology is quite new and hence has not been absorbed in all regions of the world. North America and Europe are thus the market leaders along with a considerable market in Japan. Asia-Pacific is also a considerable market for endoscopy, although neuroendoscopy as a technique is yet to showcase its strength. Other major drivers for this market are the increasing demand from hospitals to reduce patient stay, and a minimally invasive neurosurgical technique will greatly reduce stay which will also reduce healthcare costs for countries. In terms of key players, the global neuroendoscopy devices market is consolidated with around 6-7 companies contributing to over 85%-90% of the market. Large unregulated fragmented Asia-Pacific manufacturers cannot currently compete with the global leaders in this market. Companies such as Adeor which is a leader in neuroendoscopy have realized a stronger market share from Europe and Asia-Pacific. Other leaders include Aesculap (part of B.Braun) and Karl Storz. The other notable companies besides the ones mentioned above include Medtronic, ConMed, Richard Wolf and Covidien. Some companies have even begun to explore the opportunities of flexible endoscopy in neurological applications. Many companies have collaborated with Asian imaging and optical experts such as Sony, Fuji and Olympus, which shows that there are great opportunities for companies with imaging technologies such as Carl Zeiss.
