Native Hawaiian Plants Power Point Native Hawaiian Plants Power Point Presentation Transcript

    • Native Hawaiian Plants Important Points!
    • Note
        • Underlined , Italicized , or Bolded words are important!
    • Arrived by natural means…
        • Wind - Jet streams blew tiny seeds or spores half way around the world
        • Water (ocean currents)- Plant material (seeds or vegetative reproductive parts) drifted on the ocean currents
        • Birds - Birds transported seeds with them when they flew over the ocean.  The seeds were either in the stomachs or adhered to the body of the bird.
    • Two Types..
        • Indigenous - occurring naturally in Hawaii and other locations
        • Endemic - found only in the Hawaiian Islands
        •   Majority of native Hawaiian plants are endemic !
    • Why do we need to save Endangered Hawaiian Plants?
        • 90% of our native plants are found nowhere else in the world and are some of the most endangered.
        • Growing and learning about Native Hawaiian Plants connects us to our Hawaiian heritage.
        • Being able to grow and learn about Native Hawaiian Plants is more enhancing to the learner if you can actually do it with real plants.
    • Why do we need to save Endangered Hawaiian Plants? (cont.)
        • Our flora are the most endangered in the world
        • If grown in their proper zones Native Hawaiian Plants use much less water than many exotic species, resulting in lower water usage .
        • Once established on a site they require less maintenance than non-native plants, and less fertilization and pruning is needed.
        • Once we start losing Native Hawaiian Plants, we start losing the animals that eat them, and the animals that eat those animals and so on and so on in the food chain…
    • What will awareness of Endangered Native Hawaiian Plants and Hawaiian Plants do to save them?
        • More people will be motivated to care for and learn about Native Hawaiian Plants
        • Awareness of native Hawaiian plants will increase important cultural understanding, appreciation and respect for Hawaiian history and culture.
        • Telling a few people, leads to letting a lot of people know as the news spreads, and spreads, and spreads…
    • Why are Native Hawaiian Plants Endangered?
        • Land development
        • Overwhelming spread of invasive species and weeds - such as: miconia, banana poke, fountain grass, Guava, and ginger compete with Native Hawaiian Plants for space, sunlight, and nutrients .
        • They eventually replace Native Hawaiian Plants if not controlled or rooted up
        • Introduced mammals- such as: pig, goats, sheep, and deer consume native Hawaiian Plants by trampling roots and seedlings, accelerate erosion, promote weed invasion , facilitate the spread of mosquitoes.
    • What would we inform people of? YOU TELL ME!
