Aging in place helps people stay in the home they love. My mission is to inform others on how to increase their independence, ensure their safety and enhance their personal living space. Mission Statement

Seniors Are Staying at Home
Only 7% of Canadian senior’s will move to long term care facility, 93% will be living on their own or with family and friends.
The majority of Canadian seniors live in their own home, apartment or condo & wish to remain there as long as possible!
The age of senior’s homes often means that such homes are in need of repair and updating.

Clients
80% of older Americans own their own home.
75% of these homeowners are debt free.
70% of those able to make changes have made at least one modification to make their homes easier to live in
85% have made simple changes to their homes
67% of those making changes or modifications to their homes believe doing so will allow them to live there longer than they would have otherwise been able to - most for another 10 or more years.

Seniors prefer home

Falls are serious!
Falls account for 4 of every 5 injury-related hospitalizations by seniors in Canada.
20% of deaths related to an injury can be traced back to falls!
20% of senior’s who are hospitalized with a fall never walk again
40% of admissions to nursing home are due to falls!
50% of falls occur in the home!
Cost of a fall include personal suffering, loss of independence and lower quality of life.

Health costs due to falls is $1.4 billion each year.
Home accessibility is one part of a mixed strategy to help reduce falls by seniors.

Aging and Disabilities
1 in 4 seniors will face restrictions in their activities due to long-term health problems.
1.5 million or 13% of Ontarians live with disabilities.
This number will increase substantially as the population ages.

Aging and Disability - Disability Rates are Slightly Higher for females than males, 16% in the 45-64 cohort increasing to 31% in the 65-74 age group and climbs to 53% in 75+ cohort

Common Age-Related Limitations
Mobility (e.g., walking, climbing stairs, carrying an object for short distances, standing in one spot)
Chronic Pain (constant or recurring)
Agility (e.g., difficulty bending, stooping, reaching, grasping, co-ordination, balance)
Sensory (e.g., hearing, seeing, speaking)
Psychological (e.g., anxiety, depression, substance misuse)
Memory (e.g., Alzheimer’s, brain injury, stroke)

Ontario Building Code regulates barrier free building standards for commercial and institutional structures
The Ontario Human Rights Code requires a “duty to accommodate” persons with disabilities in a variety of services. The Code supersedes the building Code
The AODA 2005 Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act
Section 2 of The Planning Act designates accessibility as a Provincial Interest.
There is currently no legislation with respect to residential accessibility
CSA B651 Accessible Design for Built Environment has some guidelines for residential accessibility.
