WHAT KIND OF MEDIA INSTITUTION MIGHT DISTRIBUTE YOUR MEDIA PRODUCT AND WHY?
WHAT IS DISTRIBUTION?For the type of distribution we are looking at there are two main areas we willbe looking in to. The first being the physical chain of distribution such asfilm reel to DVD to lorry to shops. For this side of distribution we looked into the scale we would be looking at for the audience of our film. For exampleas our film is a low budget film made on a small scale we wouldn’t be lookingat worldwide mass distribution and we would be looking for a company thatwould distribute on this small scale. For such an independent film we wouldbe looking at distributing the film to 25 to 50 cinemas throughout the UK.
WHAT IS DISTRIBUTION CONTINUED The other side of distribution would be advertising, as our film is quite a small independent film we would be looking into advertising via social networking and viral marketing. One of our main interests would be togenerate interest throughout social networking for example a competition toadvertise and entice students. If we had a large enough budget we could send out small scale posters to universities and colleges.
WHO WOULD BE INTERESTED IN OUR FILM? To distribute our film we would be looking at companies that focus mainly on UK based film production companies. For example Metrodome and Optimum releasing who have released films such as the awakening. I think we would focus mainly on the Optimum releasing/ Studio Canal UK company because they are the most well known which tells me that they are very good at making films well known, also because they are well known for distributing independent films from within the UK. We have chosen to aim at a UK based distribution company because we think that our film would have a mainly UK based audience. We think this because all of our target audience research has been UK based and also because our film is based in a small English town which we don’t think would accumulate much interest among a global market.
WHAT AUDIENCE DOES OUR FILM APPEAL TO?Our basic target audience was mixedgender aged between 16 and 24.However looking at a larger scaletarget audience we are basing ourfilm towards a purely UK market aswe don’t think that the film wouldgenerate much interest in a globalmarket. We think this purely becauseof the scale of the film for examplethe characters and the area in whichit has been set. Our film is a thrillerwhich is why we have targeted it ad ayounger audience as we think thatthey would be most interested in anedgy film.
MARKETING STRATEGIESOur marketing technique would match thefilm and be on a small scale with a lowbudget. We would look in to focusingmainly on social networking and viraladvertising. For example Facebookcompetitions and viral videos on youtube.By creating a Facebook competition wecould generate a lot of interest amongcolleges and universitites. If we hadenough money in the budget we wouldalso be interested in making small scaleposters that could be distributed tocolleges and uni’s around the country. Theposters could include pictures of each ofthe main characters and screen grabs fromthe short part of the film that we havealready made.
