Film distribution is the process by which the product(Film, television show etc.) is released into the market;films don’t become well known and successful by luck, it’sall up to the distributers to sell the product totelevision, cinemas, airlines or any company that showsfilms or television shows as well as circulating andmarketing the product so that people can watch it athome via DVD or download etc. The distributers play ahuge part in film production and without them no onewould have heard of the big films today!
Our film ‘Ebony’ is a hybrid Thriller, These are other thriller films which weused as research for our film:-Dreamworks distributed ‘The Ring’-New line cinema distributed ‘Se7en’-Cinemagic Pictures distributed ‘I spit on your grave’-‘Screen Gems’ distributed ‘Arlington RoadI think that ‘Screen Gems’ which was founded in 1999 and is a Subsidiaryof Sony Pictures a film studio would be the best company to distributeour film because it has produced lots of hybrid Thriller films like ‘Half pastdead’, ‘When a stranger calls’ and ‘Prom night’ so I think it wouldmarket our film quite well because it’s had a lot of experience and boxoffice success with thriller and horror films.
I think that our film could be successful with audiences world widebecause all the films we researched (The Ring, Arlington Road, Se7en, ISpit On Your Grave) are all produced and distributed in America and ifeven we have heard of them here in Britain, they must have beensuccessful worldwide and as our film ‘Ebony’ is of a similar genre tothese films I think that it will be quite successfulHere are some statistics about what types of audiences went to seethriller films similar to ours:-The majority of the audience that viewed ‘The Ring’ were aged 15-34 and people whowent to see the film were women at 54%, although there were still a lot of male viewers at46%-The majority of the audience that saw ‘Bourne Identity’ were aged 15-34 and the majorityof people who went to see the film were male by 63% and female 37%-The majority of the audience that watched ‘No country for old men’ were aged 15-32and the majority of people who went to see the film were male by 59% (women by 41%)This information shows that our audience will be aged 15-34 and theywill be mainly male to female.
Marketing is very important in distribution otherwise the product can’t beheard of, some ways we could market our product could be through:-Word of mouth We could do this by telling friends, family, colleagues etc.about our film-Poster- we could design a poster and put it up around towns, colleges, restaurants and so on-Trailers We could design a trailer like they do for big movies like ‘Twilight for‘Ebony’ and release it onto popular social network sites like YouTube andFacebook-Online and Mobile apps We could create an application which couldused via smart phone or online e.g. a game like angry birds-Publicity by putting adverts in magazines, newspapers, billboards, on theside of buses etc., merchandise,-Film festivals we could organize a market where distributors seeking toacquire product may meet with sellers (agents, producers, studios), Acompetition, where new titles may be screened to juries of filmmakers andawarded prizes, a high-profile platform where films can be showcased priorto release-Premiere are seen as glamorous and exclusive, our distributors publicistscould organise a premiere in prime location as an official launch for a film, providing a platform for photo opportunities and red carpet interviews.
• The Advantages to self-distribution include retaining full control and rights over our film, thus giving us the choice over where our film is shown. Additionally we dont have to give any of the money made from any sales of our film to a distributor.• The Disadvantages to self-distribution are that it can be a full-time job as it can be very time consuming chasing buyers and sales and filling in paperwork, It also might limit our options for sales plus we would need to be very legally knowledgeable and make sure that were not signing away rights to our film that will prevent us from showing where we wantI think the disadvantages weigh out the advantages and withall this in mind, I think that it would be a smart decision not to doself-distribution, though we might save money, I don’t think thatit’s worth the risk of accidentally signing over our the film.
