    • As an ART FORM involving creative choices and techniques, like editing, mise-en-scene, framing and camera movement.
    • As a COMMERCIAL PRODUCT , made by an industry and designed to make a profit.
    • As an important indicator of SOCIAL VALUES AND ATTITUDES.

    • A wide range will be studied, not just Hollywood blockbusters - to develop your skills of observation , textual analysis , research and discussion.

    • FM1 – Exploring Film Form
    • For this unit you will analyse films in terms of their form and meaning . You will write a 1500 word essay on a 5 minute film sequence.
    • You will also have the opportunity to create a short film sequence of between one and two minutes in length.
    • Assessment : Coursework Portfolio (40%)

    • FM2 – British and American Cinema
    • For this unit you will analyse the film industry ; and film consumption in American and British Contexts.
    • You will also look at issues of representation in British Cinema.
    • Finally you will study the Western genre , comparing films from different eras.
    • Assessment : Written Exam 2 ½ hours

    • FM3 – Film Research and Creative Products
    • For this unit you will have the opportunity to undertake your own research project based upon an aspect of film that interests you.
    • You will also have the opportunity to create your own complete short film.

    • FM4 – Varieties of Film Experience: Issues and Debates
    • For this unit you will study films from different contexts offering new viewing experiences. Topics studied will include:
            • World Cinema
            • Documentary
            • Single Film Close Study
    • Assessment : Written Exam 2 ¾ hours

    • Students will not be expected to have studied Film before.
    • However, because the subject is essay-based, a C grade in GCSE English Language is essential.
