Background
Colorado is widely considered the premier skiing and snowboarding region in the world, with the most reliable snow
conditions, finest resorts, and over 10,000,000 skier visits per year. However, only in the recently completed 2010
Vancouver Winter Olympic Games did Colorado capture its first Gold Medals in Alpine Skiing and Nordic
Combined.
The “Colorado Gold Medal Initiative” is focused on creating sustainable Olympic success by providing resources for
the development of Olympic hopefuls to create a legacy of Olympic excellence in snow sports for Colorado.
RMD provides funding through supporting grants. Funds are awarded to member disciplines (Alpine, Nordic-
Combined, and Freestyle) for programs that are designed to recruit, retain, and develop talented, young Colorado
athletes who possess the pre-requisite competencies to become competitive, advance to the U.S. Ski Teams, and
participate at the highest levels of international competition.
The “Colorado Gold Medal Initiative” is the rallying cry for RMD, its member sports, clubs, athletes, coaches,
parents and supporters. It provides a focus for RMD’s programming, fundraising and communications. It provides a
tangible goal. The “Colorado Gold Medal Initiative” is designed not to duplicate the efforts of the U.S. Ski and
Snowboard Teams or individual clubs; rather, it supports the programming designed to help Colorado athletes
reach the next level, and to develop the skills to succeed at the highest level.
