  • 1. OLC Batch Edit Panel: Specialized Tools for Batch Editing MarcEdit PANEL TERRY REESE, REESE.2179@OSU.EDU; REESET@GMAIL.COM
  • 2. Merge Records Tool Allows users to merge MARC data from two files Allows users to merge unique data, selected data and all data.
  • 3. Merge Records Tool • Characteristics of the Tool • By default, the tool assumes records to be merged come from two separate files, though… • And option exists that allows the tool to merge duplicate records in the same file together • Tool has multiple matching methods • Control number • ISBN • ISSN • LCCN • MARC21 • MARC21 is the recommended process for Dedup • MARC21 algorithm can be configured, turning match points on and off.
  • 4. Merge Records Tool • Characteristics of the Tool • Three merging methods • Merge all data (overwrites all existing field data with data from the file to merge) • Merge Unique data (captures *all* unique data) • Selected data merge (select fields to merge)
  • 5. Record Deduplication MarcEdit provides a simple dedup tool that can: ◦ Dedup on a defined control field (any field) ◦ Dedup on a transaction field (or using an additional transaction field) Output ◦ Removes all duplications and saves the duplications to a file ◦ Prints just unique items within the file (i.e., those without a duplicate pair)
  • 6. Editing MARC MarcEditor ◦ Supports a number of global editing functions: ◦ Find/Replace functionality ◦ Globally Add/Delete MARC fields ◦ Globally Edit Subfield data ◦ Conditionally add/remove field data ◦ Globally Edit Indicator data ◦ Globally Swap field data ◦ Record Deduplication ◦ Record Sorting ◦ Call Number Generator ◦ Automation
  • 7. Specialized Tools Edit Subsets of Records: ◦ Tool allows users to extract subsets of a file, make changes, and save them back into the original file. Edit Shortcuts: ◦ Edit shortcuts represent tools that answer specialized questions, that don’t rise to the level of having complete global editing functions. Examples, case conversion, Find records missing a field or subfield, etc. Moving data between MarcEdit and the Web ◦ MarcEdit can convert clipboard content into MARC8 or UTF8 so data can be moved between different applications.
  • 8. Task Automation Tool New to MarcEdit 5.2, Task Automations ◦ Task automation provides a way for non-programmers to create defined task lists that can then be executed automatically ◦ The different between a task and a macro is that MarcEdit tasks essentially function like the user was calling specific functions within MarcEdit. ◦ Anything that you can do in the MarcEditor, you can automate as a task.
  • 9. Task Automation Managing Tasks ◦ Task management works like macro management ◦ You can ◦ Create new tasks ◦ Clone tasks ◦ Rename tasks ◦ Delete tasks ◦ Edit tasks
  • 10. Task Automation Demo Additional Information: ◦ Youtube: ◦ Introduction to task automation: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gmqTGfTubU4 ◦ Introduction to new task automation functions: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fnorN0MFFN0
  • 11. Working with OCLC Connexion The MarcEdit Connexion plugin allows users to interact with the Connexion local file, make edits, and then save the data back to Connexion’s local file. ◦ Caveat – when running on 64-bit systems, you must use MarcEdit’s 32-bit Mode (main window option)
  • 12. Interested in Learning More? • Tomorrows MarcEdit session will focus primarily on Batch RDA processing, integration with OCLC’s web services, and working with non-MARC data • Join the MarcEdit Listserv: https://listserv.gmu.edu/cgi-bin/wa?SUBED1=marcedit-l&A=1 • Contact me directly: reeset@gmail.com • YouTube Channel: http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLrHRsJ91nVFScJLS91SWR5awtFfpewMWg
