  • 2. Understanding Soul Food Cooking A lot of people today engage on soul food cooking. For those who are not familiar with the term, it is the same as the traditional American way of cooking. Unlike cooking Italian food which is far more formal and expensive, soul food cooking is considered to be the cheapest and the fastest way to prepare food. Today, many foods are prepared in such a way; that is why, it is helpful to learn more about these types of food to know how good they can or cannot be for our bodies.
  • 3. Soul Food Cooking – A Definition Soul food is a term used to distinguish the American selection of food apart from the others. Many years ago, the black population of America first invented this food to address to poverty issues. The word “soul” was a common adjective used in describing African Americans; thus, the term soul food cooking was established.
  • 4. Soul Food Cooking – The Origins The term soul food cooking was derived during the early 1400’s. At that time, poverty was widespread over the country that people had to find means to alleviate their condition. Through the soul food, thousands of people were lifted from poverty and were saved from malnutrition. Today, they are still commonly eaten because of their cheap costs and the fast food preparation process that immediately attends to the basic needs of the people.
  • 5. Soul Food Cooking – Sample Foods Soul food cooking makes use of the simplest ingredients that can be found everywhere. They make use of vegetables, meat, bread, and other food items that can be easily spotted. Most of these foods are deep fried when served since the frying method is the quickest type of food preparation.
  • 6. Vegetables Are Cooked Separately Vegetables are cooked separately and are usually boiled to counter the oil-rich substance found in meats. They are served as side dishes together with the prepared fried meat. Breads can also serve as side dishes that are used to swipe the remaining saucy dish. Bread is also a very popular add-on to an American meal.
  • 7. Soul Food Cooking – Implications On Health Soul food cooking faced a lot of issues ever since its rise in popularity. This is because many reports have shown a major rise in heart diseases and in diabetes because of such kind of food preparation. True enough, soul food are rich in cholesterol and fats that contribute to the occurrence of many diseases. However, if they are prepared using healthy oil, the risks of heart incidence can be lowered. The ingredients matter much in telling if the food is healthy to eat or not.
