DSK

 1. 1. What is it all about?
 2. 2. Drunk driving is the problem, SAFE RIDES are the answer.
 3. 3. How do Safe Ride Programs Help You?

A safe ride organization is the designated driver for those who drink or use drugs.

A safe ride organization is non-judgmental.

A safe ride is the SAFE and RESPONSIBLE choice after a party.

 4. 4. How Does DSK Work?

DSK runs anywhere from 2-7 cars Thursday – Saturday 11PM to 3AM.

Call 269-345-0DSK, and a car is sent to pick up you and your friends.

Student volunteers man phones, maps, and cars.

DSK is free to students and anyone with them, but donations are accepted!

 5. 5. Interviews With Courtney and Shannon

Why do you volunteer for DSK?

S: I first started with DSK just because I needed volunteer hours and it sounded like fun. However, the more I got involved, the more I realized that it was a good cause and I got to learn more about other people just by the small talk made in the cars. It really is a fun experience that is enlightening and rewarding.

C: I have met so many great people throughout this organization as well as being able to help out Western students stay safe.

 6. 6.

What is your favorite experience from volunteering for DSK?

S: On one occasion I was with a patron and her boyfriend’s sister. Making small talk, my partner asked how their night was. She broke down sobbing about how her baby brother is going to Iraq and she cant protect him anymore. Even after we got to her apartment we stayed to calm her down and reassure her that he will be okay. It was really touching to have someone let us into their life like that.

 7. 7.

C: To pick just one favorite experience is very tough. There has been many long nights that have left me with life long friends.

 8. 8.

Why do you think DSK is important?

S: [DSK] cuts down on drunk driving and keeps people safer.

C: DSK keeps students safe at night. It also shows the importance of making responsible decisions while being intoxicated.

 9. 9.

Why should students volunteer for DSK?

S: Many people I know volunteer for DSK because they have been in that situation and know how safe they feel calling DSK to drive them home and wish to do the same for others. DSK is a rewarding and fun experience that people should try at least once. It really helps to show you other people and perspectives.

 10. 10.

C: DSK provides a great experience for students with old or new friends. Also, DSK allows for students to get involved on campus as well as help out other Western students.

 11. 11.

Do you feel that DSK helps reduce tragedy caused by intoxication?

S: In Kalamazoo, yes. It may not help in the grand scheme of things, but if all the people we drive home tried to drive themselves, it wouldn’t end well.

C: I believe that DSK gives awareness to students about alcohol related decisions and the importance of staying safe while drinking.

 12. 12.

Do you think that DSK causes students to make more responsible choices?

S: [DSK] gives people the opportunity to make responsible decisions and gives another option when people drink; they can drive home themselves, stay the night, or call DSK. DSK [patrons] can and may be more apt to make responsible decisions.

 13. 13.

C: I strongly think that students do make more responsible choices because DSK is available for them to call and have them bring them home safely.

 14. 14. My DSK Experience

During my freshman year of college, I needed 10 volunteer hours. There were a million volunteer opportunities thrown my way, but one stuck out; Drive Safe Kalamazoo. It had so many perks! I could learn the city, meet awesome people, and go on cool trips! I had a blast and volunteered much over my 10 hours. Everyone should volunteer for DSK at least once!

 15. 15. What Can YOU Do?

Volunteer!

If you are in a city that offers a safe ride program, they are always in need of volunteers!

Donate!

Most safe ride programs are non-profit and run strictly off of donations. Donation money runs the cars and phones that allow the program to run!
