    System software consists of programs to control the operations of computer equipment (ex. operating system)

    Application software consists of programs that tell a computer how to produce information

  • 5. What’s a network?
    A network is a collection of connected computers and devices
    Local Area Network (LAN)
    Wide Area Network (WAN)
    Computers on a network share printing & software
  • 6. Network terms to know
    Server = a computer or device on a network that manages network resources ex. file server, web root server
    Network interface card (NIC) = card inserted into a computer so the computer can be connected to a network
    Firewall = a system designed to prevent unauthorized access to or from a private network
    Router = a device that forwards data packets along networks and is located where a network connects
    Modem = a device that turns the signals from either your phone, cable line, DSL line, etc. into a format computers can understand

    The internet has had a tremendous impact on business. For some businesses, that influence has not been positive. For example, surveys suggest that as a growing number of people make their own travel plans online, travel agents are seeing fewer customers.
    Use the Web to research two businesses that have been affected negatively by the Internet. How has the Internet hurt the business? How can the business compete with the Internet?
