Evans, Our God is Awesome: God's Wrath

  1. 1. Is a pastor who tells you only of God’s love and forgiveness and patience doing you a poor service - should he be disciplined for not doing a full job? What parts of God’s character do we try to ignore because we are uncomfortable talking about them? What else should he be telling you to give you the ‘full counsel’ of God?Monday 7 March 2011
  2. 2. The Wrath of GodMonday 7 March 2011
  3. 3. According to Evans there is more in the Bible about God’s wrath than about his love. The wrath of God is defined as his necessary, just, and righteous retribution against sin. Because of the justice of his law and the righteousness of his character God must judge sin - he takes no delight in punishing sin but he will because he is a God of wrath.Monday 7 March 2011
  4. 4. Ps 18:8 Ex 34:7 - guilty will not go unpunished Dt 32:41 - 1 Pet 1:17 - The words used in the Bible for God’s wrath include the idea of his intense displeasure of sin and his judgement against it. All sin is thought of in the same way by God - there are no big or little sins etc.Monday 7 March 2011
  5. 5. 1. God’s wrath is one of his perfections Rom 11:22 ESV Note then the kindness and the severity of God: severity toward those who have fallen, but God’s kindness to you, provided you continue in his kindness. Otherwise you too will be cut off. Severity in Greek means “to be cut off” Note here the balance of severity and kindness - they are both part of who God is.Monday 7 March 2011
  6. 6. 1. God’s wrathGod’s severity 1.a. is one of his perfections Rom 11:22 ESV Note then the kindness and the severity of God: severity toward those who have fallen, but God’s kindness to you, provided you continue in his kindness. Otherwise you too will be cut off. Severity in Greek means “to be cut off” Note here the balance of severity and kindness - they are both part of who God is.Monday 7 March 2011
  7. 7. Nahum 1:2-6 The LORD is a jealous and avenging God; the LORD is avenging and wrathful; the LORD takes vengeance on his adversaries and keeps wrath for his enemies. The LORD is slow to anger and great in power, and the LORD will by no means clear the guilty. His way is in whirlwind and storm, and the clouds are the dust of his feet. He rebukes the sea and makes it dry; he dries up all the rivers; Bashan and Carmel wither; the bloom of Lebanon withers. The mountains quake before him; the hills melt; the earth heaves before him, the world and all who dwell in it.  Who can stand before his indignation? Who can endure the heat of his anger? His wrath is poured out like fire, and the rocks are broken into pieces by him.Monday 7 March 2011
  8. 8. 1.b. God’s Goodness Nahum 1:7 The LORD is good, a stronghold in the day of trouble; he knows those who take refuge in him. Because God is good he will not choose to ignore evil - a policeman is not good if he chooses to ignore crimes So God’s wrath is good in its intention towards evil, he wants to resist it! In this way heaven is kept pure from sinMonday 7 March 2011
  9. 9. 1.c. God’s Righteous Wrath God does not display his wrath in the way we get mad or angry - he does not lose control God’s wrath is a right response to what is against his nature - it is not a cruel thing but a righteous one. God wants justice and righteousness in the universe, so he has to respond to sin to maintain his character - his response is to cut the sinner off from his goodness. “How can a God of love do that?” because he is also a God of wrath.Monday 7 March 2011
  10. 10. 2. God’s Wrath displays his Justice God’s wrath shows his ongoing display of action against sin and for justice. Rom 1:18 The wrath of God is being revealed from heaven against all the godlessness and wickedness of people, who suppress the truth by their wickedness, Revealed shows the ongoing nature of God revealing his wrath - we live in his universe and play by his rules! God continually reacts (he keeps on) to sin - Evans says we have to tell people of this.Monday 7 March 2011
  11. 11. 2.a. Tracing God’s Wrath There is a long history of God’s wrath: Adam & Eve kicked out of Eden The Flood The Tower of Babel Sodom & Gomorrah Pharaoh What other examples can you name? Ultimate example - Jesus taking the wrath of God on the crossMonday 7 March 2011
  12. 12. 2.b. God’s Character Distorted Rom 1:19-23 For what can be known about God is plain to them, 22Claiming tohas shown it to them. because God be wise, they became fools, 23and exchanged 20For his invisible attributes, namely, the eternal power and divine nature, his glory of the immortal God for images resemblingperceived, ever since have been clearly mortal man and birds and animals and creeping things the creation of the world, in the things. been made. So they are that have withoutsin we have disregarded In our excuse. 21For although they knew and replaced not honor him as God God, they did him with God or give thanks want. but they whatever else we to him, became futile in their thinking, and their foolish hearts were darkened.Monday 7 March 2011
  13. 13. 2.b. God’s Character Distorted 22Claiming to be wise, they became fools, 23and exchanged the glory of the immortal God for images resembling mortal man and birds and animals and creeping things. In our sin we have disregarded God and replaced him with whatever else we want.Monday 7 March 2011
  14. 14. 2.c. God’s “Giving Up” So what does God do - he gives up on people like that - Rom 1:24, 26, 28 Therefore God gave them up in the lusts of their hearts to impurity...God gave them up to dishonorable passions...God gave them up to a debased mind In essence God lets them have all that they want - with all the consequences of it. Read up to Rom 1:32 and discuss.Monday 7 March 2011
  15. 15. 3. God’s Wrath displays his Justice in Eternity Rom 2:5 But because of your hard and impenitent heart you are storing up wrath for yourself on the day of wrath when God’s righteous judgment will be revealed. Sometimes we see “sinners” getting away with things - God does not ignore these, he waits Ps 7:12 -If a man does not repent, God will whet his sword; he has bent and readied his bow;Monday 7 March 2011
  16. 16. 3. God’s Wrath displays his Justice in 3.a. 19. 19. 3.c. Eternal Wrath Experienced Evans suggests based on Luke 16 in hell we will have memories - but there will be no fellowship just pain and suffering Luke 12:47-48 suggests there will be ‘degrees of suffering’ in hell depending upon what you knew whilst on earth.Monday 7 March 2011

  21. 21. 3. God’s Wrath comes when his patience is ignored Rom 9:22 -What if God, desiring to show his wrath and to make known his power, has endured with much patience vessels of wrath prepared for destruction, 2 Pet 3:9 - The Lord is not slow to fulfill his promise as some count slowness, but is patient toward you,not wishing that any should perish, but that all should reach repentance. 23. 23. 4.b. The End of Patience No one knows the day they will die - so today is the day of salvation - Heb 4:7-15 Numbers 14 shows the Israelites rebelling against God’s plans - God wants to destroy them but Moses reminds God of his patience, and God restrained his wrath - but he did judge them later on in the chapter! Ecc 8:11 -Because the sentence against an evil deed is not executed speedily, the heart of the children of man is fully set to do evil.Monday 7 March 2011

  29. 29. 5.b. Saved from Wrath Salvation from the wrath of God only comes through Jesus Christ - nothing else will do. Many Christians do not bother to tell people this - Evans says Ezek 3:15-19 declares the blood of those not told will be on your own hands. We should warn people to escape God’s wrath and embrace his forgivenessMonday 7 March 2011
  30. 30. Responding to the Wrath of God The Bible does not hold back on God’s wrath - we should not pretend it is not going to happen. 1. What are you doing about / for non-Christian friends, family, co-workers? 2. Read Psalm 73 - thank God that no matter how hard this life is there is something better to look forward to. 3. Are you really born again or just a church attender?Monday 7 March 2011
