Wind Technology development
Key industry-wide factors since 2000

New Grid Requirements significantly increased for flexibility
Variable Speed Dominance with different converter systems
Aerodynamic Improvements and Rotor Loading has been decreasing; shift
towards lower mean wind speeds
Offshore Wind power best practices for infrastructure and installation solutions
Overall Trends:
- Turbine sizes will continue to grow, but much slower than before
- Reliability will be even higher priority than now
- Focus on weight reductions will increase
- New manufacturing and transportation concepts will be developed
Power conversion: Generator excitation will be with permanent magnets
Machinery and support structure: Hybrid structures will become common
Grid interaction:
- Wind turbines have to be ”power plants”, not just ”energy plants”

Conclusion
Quality leadership based on a solid design with
 innovative but robust solutions
97 % of the 1983-1990 turbines are still in operation,
18 to 25 years after installation.
 Wind Farm availability with professional
maintenance support services, your network could
reach up to 95% or more
Engineering locally providing fast feedback loop &
fault analysis to fix problems & ensure high reliability
Qualified and experienced local resources at local
 sites are key for success
Efficient Supply Chain ensuring short lead- &
 delivery time for spare parts
Professional training covering major and critical
areas, including HSE, of wind turbines is supporting
the operation of the network .

Our Regional services networks are the key to
maintain the high availability of Siemens Turbines

Availability: number of hours the turbine is operating or is ready to operate divided with the total number of hours in the year. Grid outage, excess wind
speeds and other factors outside Siemens’ influence do not count against availability

  • 4. Wind Technology development Key industry-wide factors since 2000 New Grid Requirements significantly increased for flexibility Variable Speed Dominance with different converter systems Aerodynamic Improvements and Rotor Loading has been decreasing; shift towards lower mean wind speeds Offshore Wind power best practices for infrastructure and installation solutions Overall Trends: - Turbine sizes will continue to grow, but much slower than before - Reliability will be even higher priority than now - Focus on weight reductions will increase - New manufacturing and transportation concepts will be developed Power conversion: Generator excitation will be with permanent magnets Machinery and support structure: Hybrid structures will become common Grid interaction: - Wind turbines have to be ”power plants”, not just ”energy plants” © Siemens AG / Siemens Wind Power 2009. • 11. Conclusion Quality leadership based on a solid design with innovative but robust solutions 97 % of the 1983-1990 turbines are still in operation, 18 to 25 years after installation. Wind Farm availability with professional maintenance support services, your network could reach up to 95% or more Engineering locally providing fast feedback loop & fault analysis to fix problems & ensure high reliability Qualified and experienced local resources at local sites are key for success Efficient Supply Chain ensuring short lead- & delivery time for spare parts Professional training covering major and critical areas, including HSE, of wind turbines is supporting the operation of the network . Our Regional services networks are the key to maintain the high availability of Siemens Turbines Availability: number of hours the turbine is operating or is ready to operate divided with the total number of hours in the year.
