Research Questions • What are the different social, economic, and institutional factors that shape successful community forestry outcomes? • What is the role of social capital in improving forest outcomes in community forestry? • What are the major institutional arrangement that structure the implementation of community forestry and how can they be connected to the architecture of REDD+ initiatives?
  4. 4. Methodology • Applied full IFRI protocols (has both an economic and an institutional focus) • Household survey (n=30) • Interviews regarding REDD+( 4 master’s students from UM)
  5. 5. Financial Support • The social development department of the World bank through University of Michigan
  6. 6. Research progress • 22 IFRI research sites revisited • Data entry is in final stage • Desk-review of the secondary information on community forestry, and collection of available information in identified study sites as well as for the status of REDD+
  7. 7. Preliminary finding • Improving forest condition in hilly sites while degrading condition in terai • Over all forest institution has been weaken • Even forest institution has been weaken some sites have improving forest condition • Little knowledge about REDD+ among forest users • Widening the gap and increased contestation between CSO and Government • Further decline in stakeholder interest in REDD+ process
