  • welcome to “the truth...”\n\nnow, briefly, about me, my name is R Blank and I’m CTO of your host, Almer/Blank\nwe’re a boutique digital production agency, and Adobe Solution Partner for the Flash Platform, based here in this warehouse\nand here’s some of our work\n\n

  • everything I am about to tell you is true -- currently true, now, in the present\n\nfor over a decade, I’ve been hearing marketing propaganda about Flash on mobile devices, dating back to early-model Nokia bricks\n\nbut, for the first time, it’s all actually real\nwith real software\nrunning on real hardware\nthat’s already in the hands of millions and millions of consumers\n\n\n

  • the blackberry playbook tablet\n
  • in fact, you can get your Flash content to any device that runs\n Google’s android operating system\nApple’s iOS\nor the BlackBerry Playbook tablet\n

  • Adobe has gone to great lengths to make sure that Flash not only runs on these devices, but runs well\n\n\n
  • Adobe has gone to great lengths to make sure that Flash not only runs on these devices, but runs well\n\n\n
  • the first 8 versions of Flash Player did not feature that much, in terms of improving performance\nin fact, the fact that Flash didn’t exploit device-specific optimizations, and was thus platform agnostic, was a major selling point, at a time when the web worked really differently on different computers\n\nthe past several versions of the Flash Player have seen massive performance improvements\nsummarized here\nimprovements that you can see on the desktop\nbut which also dramatically improve performance on less powerful, mobile devices\n\nthe result is that today’s Flash Player is hundreds of times more powerful than the Flash Player of just a few years ago!\n\n\n
  • still, with Flash on mobile, they’ve come a long way\nbut it is important to note that \nyou are limited in terms of power\n\nand features\n\nFlash and AIR still doesn’t offer the full set of support on all devices -- but it’s improving very, very quickly\nand the next version of AIR for mobile (2.7) is going to see even more really dramatic performance improvements\n\n
  • ok, so Flash runs on these devices\nand it runs well\n\nso, how do you go about getting your Flash content and experiences into this new landscape?\n\nthat’s where it can get a little bit complicated\nand it’s complicated because the world of devices is just -- well -- more complicated than that of desktops.\n\nmobile devices are more varied (in size, power and features)\nwhich has long made mobile development more difficult and expensive than producing content targeted at desktops\n\nthere are a few different ways to get your Flash content onto these devices, depending on which you are targeting\n\n\n
  • of course, we know what the Flash Player is\nand that works on many mobile devices, to view Flash content through a web-browser browser\nbut that’s just one way to get your Flash content onto these devices\n
  • first, it’s useful to understand what AIR is, and how it is related to Flash\n\nAIR, which stands for Adobe Integrated Runtime, is a way of taking your Flash apps and content, and packaging it as a desktop application\n\nAIR takes the same Flash, and makes it work outside of the browser, where it can do more things (like TweetDeck)\n\nWhy does this matter?\n\nBecause AIR is what you use to make apps for mobile devices, too\n\nbut again, AIR is the same thing as Flash -- the same language, the same content -- the same thing, with a few different powers\n

  • also, all of these devices natively support ebooks -- which can be as simple as a digitized book, or more complex, featuring animations, interactivity, video and sounds\n\nAdobe offers a way to publish your content, straight from Flash and InDesign, to the Content Viewers for each device\n\n\n\n\n
  • so we have three ways of getting Flash content to mobile devices...\n
  • ...\n\nnow, just because it's the same Flash, doesn't mean that we're talking about the same experiences on these different devices\n...\n

  • that’s some impressive support\n\nbut of course, I’m only highlighting the mobile devices here -- which is only part of the story\n
  • because, of course, you can still target desktop PCs and Macs with the same Flash as you have been\nand the same content that you can now distribute to mobile\n\n...\n
  • and, when the new Samsung TVs come out later this year, you’ll be able to target those, as well\n\njust take a moment to digest this landscape\nthere is no other single technology (except, of course, for in-browser HTML) that you can use to reach all of these platforms, operating systems and devices\n...\n
