Every success story or great accomplishment begins with the first step - Clarifying our purpose/goals/directions. There are stories which enlightened and drive me. Without goals in life, we are just walking around blindly and led by people who can do us good or harm. In order to feel truly happy and fulfilled, we must enjoy the journey to our planned destinations with our loved ones and right people. In the pursuit of our goals, we must not forget about the resources that we already possessed, commit to give our thanks and be in a state of gratitude always.

  7. 7. GET YOUR GOALS! 1. TAKING THE FIRST STEP: BE EDUCATEDBy reading this book, I believe you are a person who is committed in learning and personalgrowth. Nothing happens unless first a dream. Goal setting is the first step behind everysuccess story. You may be told by other people about the importance of goal setting over andover again. Don’t fall in the trap of “law of familiarity” by telling yourself or others, “I know it isimportant” or “Don’t remind me again”. You know something but you are not doing it. It is just apiece of useless information. The biggest stumbling block in people’s lives is inaction. Stopmaking wishes, start visualising your goals and making them into reality. Let’s begin to openyour mind to new ideas & possibilities as well as starting to think of what really makes youhappy and fulfilled. You can also start by clarifying your life purpose and goals. Learn to ask theright questions:  Do you want to earn $5,000 or more a month?  Do you hope to save $100,000 and invest it?  Are you unhappy with your current body shape? Want to lose 15kg in the next 3 months? Or plan to gain more weight and grow your muscles?  Are you feeling lonely? Want to find your soulmate?  Do you aim to expand your network and meet high quality people?  Want to buy your dream home or car?  Do you wish to volunteer in your neighbourhood and serve the less privileged people?  Are you looking for personal growth? Want to learn a new language?Copyright © 2011 Raymond Tay 7
  8. 8. GET YOUR GOALS! 2. BE THE COMMITTED SHOOTERSome of your wants’ may be your goals or targets. Before we write them down, I want to share with youabout a shooting contest. There are only 3 contestants: Ashley, Billy and Calvin. In this contest, there are strange rules or conditions forthe contestants. The 1st shooter, Ashley, will beblindfolded and the 2nd shooter will just be a normalperson to throw the dart. The last shooter, Calvin, is given the privilege to walk to the dartboardand place the dart at the bullseye. So who do you think will win the contest? Ashley Billy CalvinThe answer is obvious. The winner will be Calvin. Why do I tell you about this shooting contest? In life, there are 3 different types of people in this world about setting goals. The first type ofpeople is the “blind” man who has no goal in life and doesn’t care much in the daily activitiesor work. He/she often just does what he/she is being told. The chance of success is absolutelyzero. The second type of people is the “Ok” man or the typical person who will set goal butdoesn’t care after that. He/she hopes to succeed and will leave it to God/parents/employers toCopyright © 2011 Raymond Tay 8
  9. 9. GET YOUR GOALS!take care of them. The chance of success is between 50% and 60%. At least, this person knowsthe directions that he/she is heading. The third type which is my favourite is the “eXcel-being”who has clear goals and believes it is a MUST to succeed. He/she will do whatever it takes toget his/her goals (as long as it is ethical and legal). The chance of success is almost 100%.Although there are always things or events that we can’t control, we can choose how we respondto them and change our approach to fit in the situation. We must be firm in our decisions butflexible in our approach. 3. WHO NEVER FAILS BEFORE?Are you afraid of failure? Do you know any successful people whohave not failed? Almost all successful people have failed one wayor another. Do you know how KFC started? Who created KFC?The man is Colonel Sanders. He went to many restaurant ownersand told them, “I have a great chicken recipe and I think if you use it,there’ll be more people coming to your restaurant to eat. I just get paid a % of your increaseprofits/earnings.” Then almost every owner replied, “Are you crazy? Why must I use yourchicken recipe? I’ve my own.” Many rejected him. But did he stop? No. He went on and asked1,009 owners before he heard his first “yes”. Isn’t it inspiring? Do you also know that Galileowas sent to jail for 8 years because people thought he was insane and should be incarcerated forclaiming the earth revolved around the sun? Walt Disney originally created a character namedOswald the Rabbit. When he went to his distributor to negotiate a better rate for the creation ofthe character, he found out that he didn’t own the rights to the character, and that the distributordid. Furthermore, that same distributor stole his employees right under him by offering thembetter pay. After this major setback, he went on to create Mickey Mouse. Successful people treatCopyright © 2011 Raymond Tay 9
  10. 10. GET YOUR GOALS!failure as feedback for them to improve. Similarly to Mr. Thomas Edison, he said, “I have notfailed. I have just found 10,000 ways that won’t work.” 4. THE POWER OF WRITTEN GOALGail Matthews, from Dominican University, had conducted a research on the impact of writtengoals. She found a total of 267 participants from businesses, organizations, and businessnetworking groups. However, only 149 participants completed the study. The final participantsranged in age from 23 to 72, with 37 males and 112 females. Participants came from the UnitedStates, Belgium, England, India, Australia and Japan and included a variety of entrepreneurs, educators, healthcare professionals, artists, attorneys, bankers, marketers, human servicesproviders, managers, vice presidents, directors of non-profits, etc.Participants were randomly assigned to one of 5 conditions (groups):  Group 1 - Unwritten Goal  Group 2 - Written Goal  Group 3 - Written Goal & Action Commitments  Group 4 - Written Goal, Action Commitments to a Friend  Group 5 - Written Goal, Action Commitments & Progress Reports to a Friend.Participants in Group 1 were simply asked to think about their goals (what they wanted toaccomplish over the next 4 weeks) and then asked to rate that goal on the following dimensions:Difficulty, Importance, the extent to which they had the Skills & Resources to accomplish thegoal, their Commitment and Motivation to the goal, whether or not they had pursued this goal…Copyright © 2011 Raymond Tay 10
