  1. 1. What Is Food Preservation? Food preservation is the process of treating and handling food in such a way as to stop or greatly slow down spoilage to prevent food from getting spoilt. This can be done in a number of ways, you can coat a food in a substance that will preserve it such as salt, sugar of vinegar. you can dry food or you cankeep it in an environment that makes bacteriathat degrades food less able to survive such as a fridge or freezer.
  2. 2. Food preservation is the science ofextending the shelf life of food whilemaintaining as much as possible of itsnutritional quality and avoiding thegrowth of unwanted micro-organisms.Food preservation has been practiced ina variety of ways for hundreds of years.
  3. 3. There are a number of different ways ofpreserving foods. Some involve storagemethods, some involve packaging, andsome involve treating the food inparticular ways prior to or during storage,either cooking it in whole or part orcombining it with other foods orsubstances.
  4. 4. Chilling food is one way of maintaining it.Some foods do well with the cool levelthat we associate with refrigeration,while other food items are best keptfrozen. Cold cellars or root cellars werehistorically used to keep produce, andthey are still used today.
