  • 1. NANO-SIZE ADDITIVES: FUNCTIONAL MATERIALS RAVI NARAIAN PANDEY MTECH (POLYMER) IST YEAR ROLL NO PST/05/10
  • 2. ORIGIN OF NANOCOMPOSITE
    • Toyota central research labs in Japan teamed up with ube industries ltd, a Japanese resin supplier to produce a new composite polymer, consisting of Nylon-6 interspersed with layers of montmorillonite.
  • 3. IMPORTANCE OF NANO FILLER AND COMPOSITE
    • “ NANO ” Appears to be the catch word today.
    • Why?
    • It has led to new developments of Materials science ,Polymer science ,Electronics and Bio –
    • Engineering, etc.
    • Same materials can be engineered for new properties :dramatic changes can be obtained by reducing the size.
  • 4. SIZE DEPENDENT PROPERTIES OF MATERIALS
    • Material behave differently in form of Nano-size, Thin Films etc.
    • Size dependency of Electrical and Mechanical ,and Optical Properties.
    • Quantum size effects .
    • Structural changes induced by such dimensional control----Mechanical props.
    • Very high surface area made available.
  • 5. Nano –size of the particles leades to more exposure of the high energy edges where atoms are “DANGLING”. NANO FILLERS ARE DIFFERENT!!
  • 6.
  • 7. There are different types of molecular structures/assemblies possible. NANO FILLERS ARE DIFFERENT!!
  • 8. METHODS OF SYNTHESIS FOR NANO –FILLERS FOR COMPOSITES:
    • IN-SITU INTERCALATED POLYMERISATION.
    • EXFOLIATION -ADSORPTION METHOD.
    • MELT INTERCALATION.
    • POLYMER MEDIATED GROWTH .
  • 9. EXFOLIATION OF MINERALS
  • 10. NANO CLAY COMPOSITE
  • 11. TYPICAL DOWN SIZING OF NATURAL MATERIAL
    • Different types of clays.
    • Different types of mica.
    • Wollastonite .
    • Celite.
  • 12. POLYMER MEDIATED GROWTH
    • Polymers/ complexing chemicals can control the growth of crystals in certain direction.
    • Polymer can be used as substrates.
    • Polymers can be templates.
    • Polymers complexed with reactants give control over size.
    • Polymer blends are even better for down sizing.
  • 13. POLYMER MEDIATED GROWTH FOR SYNTHESIS OF NANO PARTICULATE ADDITIVES
    • NANO PARTICLES
POLYMER +RECTANT-1. COMPLEXED FORMED REACTANT-2 NEW CRYSTAL SHAPES STRUCTURE
  • 14. TYPICAL EXAMPLE FOR PMG PEO+CACL2 IN METHENOL K2CO3 IN WATER WASH, PPT, DRY. NANO
  • 15. APPLICATION OF NANOFILLERS IN PLASTICS INDUSTRY
    • Dispersion and coating.
    • Special films with high barrier properties, optical properties, rust prevention, etc.
    • Functional additive for plastics molded parts.
    • Compounding with other plastics.
  • 16. IMPROVED PROPERTIES
    • BARRIER PROPERTIES : For packaging and containers.
    • MECHANICAL PROPERTIES : For automotive compounds.
    • OPTICAL PROPERTIES : For coating, glazing, solar panels.
  • 17.
    • ELECTRICAL CONDUCTIVITY : For batteries, fuel cells, mobile phones, electronic devices.
    • CORROSION RESISTANCE : For smart coating.
    • FIRE RETARDING EFFECT : For composite panels, cables.
    IMPROVED PROPERTIES
  • 18. SPECILIZED APPLICATION FOR AUTOMOTIVE SECTOR
    • IMPROVED MECHANICAL PROPERTIES AT LOW ADDITIVE CONCENTRATION :
    • Dashboards, bumpers, handles, interiors.
    • IMPROVED BARRIER PROPERTIES:
    • Paints, coatings, fuel tanks, solution containers.
  • 19.
    • IMPROVED OPTICAL PROPERTIES :
    • Hard coating.trasperency in films.
    • BETTER FLAME RETARDING :
    • Eco friendly additives.
    • HIGH TECH DEVICES :
    • Sensors, micro devices.
    SPECILIZED APPLICATION FOR AUTOMOTIVE SECTOR
