Expressing agreement and disagreement

 1. 1. EXPRESSING AGREEMENT AND DISAGREEMENT
 2. 2. EXPRESSING AGREEMENT EXPRESSING DISAGREEMENT EXPRESSING RESERVATIONS I completely agree with you on this matter. I’m sorry but I do not quite agree with you on this. This is a good suggestion but I’m worried whether… I’m in total agreement. Can we reconsider this issue? I have some alternative points to make. Your idea sounds great but I was wondering whether… I couldn’t agree with you more. That’s totally out of the question. I see your point but I think we need more time to discuss this matter. I think you are absolutely correct. I wouldn’t say that if I were you. That’s true but we need to do more research on this. I think you are right. On the contrary… Your plan looks attractive but I’m not sure I entirely agree.
 3. 3. Situation : Sheila and Majid are discussing the meaning of beauty . Majid : Hi, Sheila ! Many happy returns of the day. Sheila : Why, thank you Majid for remembering my birthday. Majid : Well, how many candles are you going to blow today? Sheila : Five big ones. Majid : Unbelievable. You look at least 10 years younger. Tell me, what is your secret? Sheila : Actually, nothing much. But I do believe that beauty is not skin deep. Majid : That’s absolutely true . Beauty comes from the inside and the outside as well. Sheila : I think we need to have a good personality besides taking care of our physical well-being. Majid : That’s for sure . Sheila : That’s why I like to keep an open mind . Majid : I couldn’t agree with you more. Sheila : As for personal grooming, I go to the spa, the hair salon and the beauty parlour regularly. It’s money well spent. Majid : From the way you look now, I totally agree.
 4. 4. EXERCISE 2 Situation : Bonnie and Tyler are talking about the latest rap number in the music scene . Bonnie : Have you heard the latest rap number by Green-Eyed Peas? I think it is cool. Tyler : You’ve got to be joking! I don’t like the lyrics at all. Bonnie : You must listen to it several times, then you will like it. Tyler : No way! The song is completely unsuitable for our youths. Bonnie : That’s a joke. The world has changed. People should not be so old-fashioned! Tyler : You don’t know what are you talking about. I don’t believe you actually like that kind of music. Bonnie : Well, say what you want, I’m going to listen to it again. Tyler : I’m not going to stand here and argue with you. I’ve advised you and I hope you’ll take my advice.
 5. 5. Exercise 3 Situation : Kamal and Nathan are discussing the possibility of taking primary school children to visit the Niah Caves.

Kamal : I think we should take all the primary school children to visit the Niah Caves this vacation.

Nathan : That’s a good suggestion though I wonder it is feasible.

Kamal : It’s only 10 km away from the school. We would charter a bus.

Nathan : Your idea was great but I was wondering whether the cost involved would be too high.

Kamal : I know of this bus company that will give special discounts. Anyway, the caves will be a good place for the children to learn about the ecosystem …you know… bats and guano.

Nathan : Your plans looks attractive but I’m not sure I entirely agree. Bat could be terrifying to young ones and some may not stand the stench of guano.

Kamal : I see your point but I think we need to discuss this matter further.

 6. 6. EXERCISE 4 STATEMENT AGREE/ DISAGREE I don’t think going to Cameron Highland is a good idea . Answer I agree completely that the love of money is the root of all evil. Answer Do you want me to buy flowers for Melissa ? No way ! Answer I don’t believe you actually want me to walk 10 km to that shop. Answer I’ll be bringing a sleeping bag for the camp, that’s for sure. Answer University students need to have critical thinking skills. That’s precisely the point. Answer You’re right. The transport system needs to be improved. Answer
 7. 7. If you think that RM10000 is sufficient for the organization of the event you don’t know what you are talking about. ANSWER I don’t think only expensive goods are quality goods. ANSWER You are absolutely correct that male emperor penguins take care of their eggs. ANSWER
 8. 8. EXERCISE 5 Situation : John and Mustapha are discussing the possibility of setting up a tuition centre. John : I think it is about time we became business partners and set up a tuition centre. Mustapha : (Agree) (1) . Many students and parents feel that tuition is very important in order to get good grades. John : I am thinking of concentrating only on the teaching of English. Mustapha : I don’t quite agree because (disagree) (2) . Most students sign up for tuition classes for all subjects. John : (Agree) (3) . Then we’ll have other subjects as well. Mustapha : What about the fees ? Do you think RM50 per subject per month is reasonable? John : (Disagree) (4) . We have to pay the salaries of the teachers, the rental and the electricity and water bills too. Mustapha : (Agree) (5) . We’ll need to discuss this further.
 9. 9. Exercise 6 Situation : Irena and John are discussing a day trip. Irena : I think we should go to Templar’s Park. John (disagree) : Irena : Really? How many times did you go there? John : Five times, to be precise. Irene (agree) : How about going to Kuala Selangor instead? John (agree) : Irena (disagree) : Yes, it’s a sanctuary for fireflies. I think we should leave around five in the evening. because of the traffic jam. Can we leave around three instead? John (agree) :
