A few Internet Jargon’s<br />ISP- A company that allows you to connect your PC to<br /> the Internet<br />FTP- A set of rules used for transferring files on the World Wide Web <br />Hyperlink – A clickable item on a Web page that allows you to connect to another web page.<br />Search Engine – A program that helps you to find information located on the Internet.<br />Spam – Unsolicitated email<br />Cookie– a small file sent to you when you visit a web site- This cookie stores information you provide to the website and later when you visit that website it helps to identify you and possibly prepare customized web pages for you<br />URL- unique address for a web page.<br />HTTP- A set of rules frequently used to transfer web pages to a host<br />server on the Internet.<br />Firewall – Prevents unauthorized users in gaining access to a network.<br />email – electronic mail ; distance over which the email is sent does not significantly affect the speed of delivery. Searchengines<br />Search engines are a great resource only if you know how to find what you are looking for. <br />Search Engines are software programs that search for the phrase or words you give it to identify the list of web pages where those keywords can be found. <br />Search engine makes your search much broader - uses spiders that crawl and a huge database to store the categorized information<br />The structure for web directories is very much like a library (Example www.rediff.com )<br />Making effective searches -<br /> (1) By using advanced search such as in Google (www.google.com) <br /> (2) Using multi-search engines like Dogpile (www.dogpile.com )<br />5thApril 2010<br />AmalJyothi College of Engineering<br />
