This document outlines the seven steps for presenting a case report: 1) Present the facts of the case, 2) Define the main problem, 3) Analyze the problem, 4) Identify alternative solutions, 5) Evaluate each alternative using a SWOT analysis, 6) Recommend the best solution, 7) Provide an action plan for implementing the recommended solution. The case method is an important learning tool that allows students to analyze real or hypothetical situations systematically and practice problem-solving as a manager.

• Case method is an important learning
approach for management students.
• Case is a situation happened.
• It may be real or hypothetical.
• Case study is like a post-mortem analysis of a
dead situation.
• It provides an opportunity to have a feel of
practical happening and workout the problem
in the role of a manager.

4. Step 1: Facts of the case
• The given case is the representation of facts only.
• But the case analyst required to study the case
carefully like a diagnosis process followed by a doctor
to identify the real background of the disease.
• This step requires identification of relevant facts.
• The facts of the case are to be presented in an order.
• So that the person to whom the case report is
presented can understand your version of the case and
the key points to be considered in understanding the
problem.

5. Step 2: Problem Definition
• The main problem should be defined
stated in simple terms.
• This requires a careful study
understanding of the situation and
factors leading to the generation of
problem.

6. Step 3: Problem analysis
• The problem defined should be analysed in
detail.
• The analysis basically cover the background of
the problem, the variables involved, the
interplay of different variables and the way
the problem was generated in the
organisation.
• The problem analysis identifies the scope of
the investigation and the critical factors to be
studied.

7. Step 4: Alternative Course of Action
• To solve a problem there may be many ways.
• Once the problem is identified, the case
analyst should analyse the alternate course of
action.
• Each alternative shall be capable of solving the
problem.

8. Step 5: Evaluation of Alternative
• Each alternative should be evaluated taking into
consideration
the
Strengths,
Weaknesses,
Opportunities and Threats of the organisation.
• Therefore, it may be appropriate to conduct SWOT
analysis of the organisation before evaluating the
alternatives.
• The purpose of evaluation is to find out the best
course of action among the alternatives.
• Therefore, the evaluation basically focuses upon the
benefits and costs of each alternative when it is used
for solving the problem of the organisation.

9. Step 6: Solution
• A comparative analysis of the alternatives
drives us to find out the best alternative.
• This is the recommendation the case
analyst can make in the case report.
• The solution should be in simple terms,
brief, clear and easily understandable.

10. Step 7: Action Plan
• The case analyst should also suggest the
implementation plan of the solution.
• The action plan details should cover step by
step implementation process and the time
frame.
