Introduction… <ul><li>The recent technological advancements in sensor development, wireless communication, and computing have dramatically promoted research of new assistance technologies. </li></ul><ul><li>which is a wireless non-obtrusive tongue operated assistive technology for people with severe disabilities. </li></ul><ul><li>The tongue-operated assistive technology, called the Tongue Drive system, was described on June 29 at the 2008 Rehabilitation Engineering and Assistive Technology Society of North America (RESNA) Annual Conference in Washington, D.C. s. </li></ul>03/18/11 Vignan University

Introduction <ul><li>Persons with disabilities as a result of various causes, </li></ul><ul><li>from traumatic spinal cord injury (SCI) </li></ul><ul><li>Generally they performing their everyday tasks extremely difficult without continuous help [1–3]. </li></ul><ul><li>In the United States alone, an estimated 11,000 new cases of SCI are added every year to a population of a quarter of a million . </li></ul><ul><li>Fifty-five percent of SCI patients are between 16 and 30 years old . </li></ul><ul><li>They will need lifelong special care that currently costs about $4 billion each year . </li></ul>03/18/11 Vignan University

Why they can chose the tongue? <ul><li>A tiny magnet, only a size of a grain of rice, is attached to an individual's tongue using implantation, piercing or adhesive. </li></ul><ul><li>Scientists chose the tongue to control the system because the tongue and the brain has a direct connection through cranial nerve. In case when a person has a severe spinal cord injure or other damage, the tongue will remain mobile to activate the system.  </li></ul>03/18/11 Vignan University

Why they can chose the tongue? <ul><li>&quot;Tongue movements are also fast, accurate and do not require much thinking, concentration or effort.&quot; </li></ul><ul><li>The Tongue Drive system is touch-free, wireless and non-invasive technology that needs no surgery for its operation. </li></ul>03/18/11 Vignan University

TDS prototypes. <ul><li>The main function of this prototype was to directly emulate the mouse pointing and selection functions with the tongue movements. </li></ul><ul><li>Six commands were defined: left, right, up, and down pointer movements and single- and double-click movements. </li></ul>03/18/11 Vignan University

How it’s work? <ul><li>In the TDS , a small permanent magnet the size of a grain of rice is secured to the tongue as a magnetic tracer by using tissue adhesives, simple implantation under the tongue mucosa through injection. </li></ul><ul><li>The magnetic field generated by the tracer inside and around the mouth varies as a result of the tongue movements. </li></ul><ul><li>These variations are detected by an array of sensitive magnetic sensors mounted on a headset outside the mouth, similar to a microphone mounted on a dental retainer inside the mouth, </li></ul><ul><li>The sensor outputs are wirelessly transmitted to a personal digital assistant (PDA). </li></ul><ul><li>A sensor signal processing(SSP) algorithm running on the PDA classifies the sensor signals and converts them into user control commands that are then wirelessly communicated to the targeted </li></ul><ul><li>devices in the user’s environment . </li></ul>03/18/11

How we can learn? <ul><li>The person who were completely unfamiliar with it. </li></ul><ul><li>30-minute explanation of the TDS operation, a 10-minute preparation period including attachment of the permanent magnet and adjustment of the face shield, and a 20-minute familiarization time to play with the system were enough for a new user . </li></ul>03/18/11 Vignan University

How it is flexible? <ul><li>During the training session, the user is free to associate any specific tongue movement with any one of the six commands defined in the system based on his or her preference, abilities, and lifestyle. </li></ul><ul><li>These tongue movements should be unique and far from other tongue movements that are either associated with other TDS commands or </li></ul><ul><li>Are natural tongue movements used during speaking,swallowing, coughing, sneezing, etc. </li></ul>03/18/11 Vignan University

Advantage of the TDS <ul><li>The principal advantage of the TDS is that a few magnetic sensors and a small magnetic tracer can potentially capture a large number of tongue movements . </li></ul><ul><li>By using TDS we can operate PC, TV, mobile ,some home appliances. </li></ul><ul><li>By using TDS technology we can operate robotic arm. </li></ul>03/18/11 Vignan University

Conclusion <ul><li>The ultimate goal in developing the TDS is to help people with severe disabilities experience and preserve an independent , self-supportive life. </li></ul><ul><li>By using this TDS technology the scientists develop speech-recognition–based ATs. </li></ul>03/18/11 Vignan University
