Hydrogen peroxide for bass boat livewells

 1. 1. Hydrogen Peroxide Does it increase oxygen in livewells?
 2. 2.

Hydrogen peroxide has been advocated to boost livewell oxygen and as an emergency additive in case of livewell pump failure.

See http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j-zfXwLNp_o

Light, heat, and organic matter causes hydrogen peroxide to breakdown.

For every two molecules that breakdown, one oxygen molecule is formed.

The greater the water temperature and organic matter (algae, fish, etc.), the faster the breakdown of hydrogen peroxide and creation of oxygen molecules in the livewell.

 3. 3.

Effectiveness of hydrogen peroxide for increasing oxygen in livewells was evaluated at Falcon Reservoir using three bass boats.

A total of 12 one-hour experiments were conducted with oxygen level measured every 10 minutes.

Livewell recirculation systems in each boat were on and water was replaced for each experiment.

Five fish limits of largemouth bass weighing from 7.9 to 22.8 pounds were present in livewells during the experiments.

Hydrogen peroxide was added at the recommended rate of 1 ounce per 3 gallons of livewell capacity.

 4. 4.

Testing at Falcon showed that livewell oxygen increased 40% 10 minutes after adding hydrogen peroxide.

However, this increase was short-lived, with oxygen returning to initial level within 30-50 minutes.

 5. 5.

Hydrogen peroxide substantially increased oxygen, but the effect was short-lived, lasting 30-50 minutes.

Anglers should be aware that physiological effects of hydrogen peroxide on fish are unknown and these could be detrimental to fish survival.

An oxygen injection system is a much better option for maintaining oxygen in livewells.

http://www.slideshare.net/raminlandfish/livewell-oxygen-injection-8773301

Conclusions and Recommendations
