  3. 3. The Department of Psychiatry at NIMHANS, Bangalore, is a very big department, in terms of bed strength and manpower. It is fulfilling its role in various aspects such as manpower development, patient care and research. The senior experienced faculty are in various national and international committees and law making bodies. The young faculty are also rapidly becoming wise and noticeable. One notable thing is the way they keep reinventing themselves. The department is in general friendly and has a benevolent big brother attitude towards other clinical departments. They have a live andlet live attitude. I wish them continued growth and contentment. Dr. B. Indira Devi, Professor, Department of Neurosurgery, NIMHANS My association with the Department of Psychiatry, NIMHANS, spans the last threedecades. It has gone through different phases – to begin with as a resident, sharingoverlapping grounds of training in neurology and psychiatry andliaising clinically with the psychiatric trainees, and now as a faculty, collaborating on clinical, training, research and administrativeareas. However, the ‘camaraderie’ has not changed and hasstrengthened over time. Exemplary training of the department in mental health ensuresskill-building, ground for ethical practice, a trend of striving forexcellence in trainees. It was the mental hospital in 1936 and latersetting up of the Department of Psychiatry in the year 1953 thatwere the impetus for the development of many other departments in the institute andsetting up of NIMHANS in the seventies. The contribution of the department of thepsychiatry to the care of our patients and training of our residents can only be felt andnot be expressed in words. We owe a lot to the department which deserves accoladeson this occasion of celebrating 60 years. Dr. Arun B. Taly, Professor, Department of Neurology, NIMHANS
